GCSE English & Entrance Exams Tutor Alfold

In the community of Alfold, many families look toward long-term educational goals, whether that involves local primary schools or the transition to significant secondary institutions like Cranleigh School or Charterhouse. I am David, an English tutor with more than 20 years of experience and a Bachelor of Education. I assist pupils in the primary years with their preparation for 11+ and 13+ entrance examinations, covering the essential skills of reading comprehension and creative writing. For a student at Alfold Primary School, this might involve learning how to use descriptive language and figurative language to enhance their stories. We also work on verbal reasoning and multiple-choice papers, which are often part of the grammar school entry process or the ISEB pre-test. By providing model answers and conducting a regular review of homework, I help students prepare for the challenges of selective school entry. Many of my pupils have been successful in securing a place at their first-choice school after following this structured approach to their studies.
As students move into the GCSE and IGCSE years at secondary schools such as Glebelands School or Broadwater, the curriculum demands a more sophisticated approach to English Language. This involves the analysis of both fiction and non-fiction texts, where students learn to compare writers’ methods and perspectives. A pupil might explore the use of polysyndeton in a narrative piece to create a specific rhythm or use direct address in a transactional format like a speech to engage the audience. I help students develop their transactional writing skills, covering formats such as letters, articles, and reports. By addressing the marking criteria of major boards like AQA and Edexcel, I show students how to refine their written assessments and ensure their ideas are expressed clearly. My students have consistently achieved top results, reflecting the effectiveness of this detailed approach to the syllabus.
The literature section of the GCSE curriculum offers an opportunity for students to engage with a variety of classic and modern texts. A student could examine the inherent human nature and social hierarchy in William Golding's Lord of the Flies or the romantic themes and poetic structure in the work of John Keats. I guide students through the process of literary analysis and criticism, showing them how to use textual evidence to support their critical responses. We look at the historical and social context of each text, ensuring that students can connect the writer’s intentions to the era in which the work was produced. My students have received excellent GCSE results, and I have many positive testimonials from parents who have seen their children’s confidence grow. By focusing on essay composition and exam technique, I ensure that every student is well-prepared for their final assessments and can approach their exams with a clear sense of purpose.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David tutored our daughter for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
