In the community of Alfold, many families look toward long-term educational goals, whether that involves local primary schools or the transition to significant secondary institutions like Cranleigh School or Charterhouse. I am David, an English tutor with more than 20 years of experience and a Bachelor of Education. The literature section of the GCSE curriculum offers an opportunity for students to engage with a variety of classic and modern texts. A student could examine the inherent human nature and social hierarchy in William Golding's Lord of the Flies or the romantic themes and poetic structure in the work of John Keats. I guide students through the process of literary analysis and criticism, showing them how to use textual evidence to support their critical responses. We look at the historical and social context of each text, ensuring that students can connect the writer’s intentions to the era in which the work was produced.
