In Alsager, I, David, offer a professional English tutoring service for students at both primary and secondary levels, drawing upon my Bachelor of Education and twenty years of experience. Pupils from Alsager Highfields Primary aiming for a place at Sandbach School must demonstrate a high level of technical accuracy in their written assessments for independent and grammar school entry. We work through reading comprehension tasks that require the candidate to scan for keywords and understand word meanings in context while building a strong vocabulary. In the 11 plus, the ability to plan a story with a strong hook is essential for standing out to examiners in a competitive selection process. An onomatopoeia could be used to enhance the sensory imagery within a descriptive writing piece, allowing the reader to hear the sounds of the setting. Through a thorough review of homework and regular timed practice, the pupil builds the self-assurance needed for the day of the exam.

Students attending Alsager School or St Mary’s Catholic work with me to attain proficiency in the dual requirements of GCSE English Language and Literature. In the Language paper, we examine how to perform a fiction analysis, identifying the structural shifts and linguistic devices used by a writer to guide the reader's attention. When producing their own transactional writing, a student might use anaphora to create a sense of emphasis by repeating a word or phrase at the start of successive clauses. We also work on narrative writing, exploring how a story can be structured to engage the reader from the outset using varied sentence lengths. A simile might be used to provide a vivid comparison that enhances the descriptive depth of a piece without relying on clichéd imagery. By working under timed conditions with past exam papers, the learner becomes familiar with the examiner’s perspective and the marking criteria.

The Literature component of the syllabus encompasses a wide variety of genres, ranging from Jacobean drama to modern prose. A pupil might explore the central themes of ambition and guilt in Shakespeare's Macbeth, considering how the playwright uses the supernatural to influence the plot. We might also examine the social hierarchy and the breakdown of order in William Golding's Lord of the Flies, looking at the historical context of the post-war era. Essay composition and structure are vital components of our sessions, as we work on how to integrate key quotations into a well-evidenced argument that addresses the exam question directly. By studying the authorial intent and the writer’s intentions, the student learns to move beyond basic summary to an evaluative level of literary analysis. Testimonials from local families often validate the professional standards and the supportive environment I provide for every learner.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
