Providing a comprehensive service to the residents of Alvechurch, I, David, guide students through the various demands of the secondary curriculum. Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Education, I offer English tutoring that addresses the needs of students at North Bromsgrove High and Woodrush High as they prepare for the assessments of boards such as AQA and Edexcel. Within my lessons, we explore the evaluation of unseen extracts by weighing the impact of a writer’s choices against a specific prompt. For example, a student might argue that a scene is constructed to evoke a sense of immediate danger by identifying how a writer describes 'the rough, splintered grain of the threshold pressing into the character’s palms' to evoke the physical reality of a forced entry. To build a persuasive case, the learner could also highlight the deliberate use of anaphora, perhaps analysing how 'the signet was a promise of wealth; the signet was a mark of blood; the signet was a heavy burden on his finger' reinforces the corruptive nature of power. Narrative and descriptive tasks are handled with equal care, especially when pupils tackle the production of articles or reports for their transactional assessments. When crafting a persuasive address, a student might utilise a triadic structure to convey a sense of absolute finality, writing that 'the anchor was dropped, the ropes were secured, and the voyage was over' to signal a permanent shift in tone. By expanding on the ways language is used to manipulate an audience’s perspective, I ensure the pupil remains capable of adapting their register to suit any given task.

Mastering the requirements of the literature syllabus involves a deep engagement with diverse genres and historical periods. Throughout my more than twenty years in the profession, I have helped students engage with the central themes and character motivations within works like George Gissing's New Grub Street. Exploring the cynical pragmatism of Jasper Milvain when he states, 'A man who writes because he is compelled to write is a fool,' allows the student to structure a response that equips the learner with the insights needed to satisfy the marking criteria for their final grades. This study of the writer's intentions extends to anthology poems, where a pupil might be asked to analyse the poetic voice in Carol Rumens’ 'The Emigrée'. By evaluating the significance of the phrase 'my shadow falls as evidence of sunlight' to show the persistent hope of the speaker, the learner develops the ability to connect close-up details back to the wider intentions of the poet. We practise extract questions and the integration of historical and social context to demonstrate how interpreting a writer’s implied meaning satisfies the requirements for perceptive analysis. This involves breaking down the structural shifts in a play or the nuances of a Victorian novel to see how a writer manages the reader’s response. Working through the curriculum is essential for students in Year 10 and 11 who are working toward the top results required for their next steps in education.

Outside of the secondary requirements, I assist younger pupils who are preparing for the competitive selection process of local independent and grammar school entrance. Many families with children at Alvechurch C of E Middle target a successful application to schools like Bromsgrove School, which require a high standard in both reading comprehension and creative writing. To develop their descriptive depth, a candidate might learn to use similes to enhance the atmosphere of a story, perhaps noting how 'the clouds hung like a heavy iron portcullis over the valley' to establish a sense of confinement. In a comprehension task, a candidate might be asked to infer a character’s anxiety from a description of a 'bonfire that spat orange sparks like angry hornets into the night sky,' explaining how the aggressive simile reflects the protagonist's internal fear. We also address the precision required for verbal reasoning and vocabulary tasks, ensuring the applicant can handle the various formats found in competitive entrance exams. By refining the ways they identify word meanings in context or solve logic puzzles, students build the necessary speed for timed practice. In their narrative writing, a learner could employ a triadic structure to describe an object, perhaps writing that 'the nut was small, wrinkled, and incredibly hard' to demonstrate an ability to select effective details. The progress made by my students is reflected in the positive testimonials I receive from parents concerning their children's developing confidence.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
