GCSE English & Entrance Exams Tutor Ashtead

Ashtead is home to a number of excellent schools, such as West Ashtead and Barnett Wood, and many students here are working toward places at prestigious institutions like the City of London Freemen's School or Epsom College. My name is David, and I have more than 20 years of experience as a professional English tutor, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Education. The study of English Literature is a vital part of the GCSE curriculum, where students learn to produce detailed critical responses to a range of texts. A pupil attending Rosebery School or St Andrew's Catholic School might investigate the doomed romance and Jacobean context of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet or the urban landscapes and modern themes in the poetry of Philip Larkin. I assist students in developing their analytical skills, focusing on how to structure a comparative literature essay and how to integrate quotations effectively. By examining the historical and social context of each syllabus text, pupils gain a deeper understanding of the writer’s intentions. My students have consistently achieved excellent GCSE results, with many securing grades that allow them to progress to their preferred Sixth Form colleges.

Within the English Language syllabus, students are required to master both creative and transactional writing. A student might learn how to use juxtaposition to create a striking contrast in a descriptive piece or employ emotive language in a persuasive article. We look at the requirements of fiction and non-fiction analysis, where comparing texts and identifying linguistic subtleties are essential skills. I teach students how to follow the strict criteria of exam boards like AQA and OCR, ensuring their work is well-evidenced and clearly expressed. By practising extract questions and following a paragraph by paragraph approach to essay writing, students can improve their exam time management. My many positive testimonials from parents reflect the progress students make when they receive structured support in these areas. We also look at SPaG and the importance of proofreading, which are essential for achieving the highest marks in written assessments.

For younger pupils, I offer preparation for the 11 plus and 13+ entrance examinations, focusing on the skills required for selective school admissions. This includes verbal reasoning, comprehension, and creative writing techniques, which are all part of the entrance exams for many independent and grammar schools. For those attending primary schools in Ashtead, the process of preparing for competitive secondary schools involves building a strong foundation in clear expression and applied reasoning. I help students to handle multiple-choice papers and written assessments, ensuring they are ready for the challenges of the examination day. By reviewing homework and focusing on model answers, I assist pupils in satisfying the entry requirements of their chosen schools. Many of my students have successfully gained entry to top schools, reflecting the effectiveness of this comprehensive approach to their primary education.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
