Qualified English Tutor Aylestone – 11 Plus & GCSE Preparation

At Montrose Primary, many pupils begin the process of preparing for the transition to selective secondary schools through English tutoring. My name is David, and I have spent over 20 years helping students in Aylestone reach the standards required for entry into prestigious institutions like Leicester Grammar School. My Bachelor’s degree in Education provides the foundation for my teaching, particularly when guiding candidates through the complexities of the 11 plus and 13 plus assessments. A student might work on descriptive writing where they employ similes to compare a character's movements to something in nature, which adds a layer of vivid language to their narrative writing. By focusing on sentence variety and punctuation for effect, the pupil learns to produce written assessments that stand out for their clarity and descriptive depth. We also look at verbal reasoning and vocabulary expansion, where the applicant learns to identify word associations and shades of meaning to solve logic puzzles. This work is essential for the ISEB pre-test and other multiple-choice papers that serve as the initial screening for competitive school entry.
Once the written exams are completed, I offer interview practice to help the candidate manage anxiety and speak confidently about their achievements. We spend time discussing a book they have enjoyed, where the student works on justifying an opinion about the plot or characters with genuine enthusiasm. The learner might be asked to talk through their problem-solving process during a logical reasoning task, or they might engage in a discussion about school contribution, identifying how they would participate in the debating team or a sports club. This process involves stripping away rehearsed scripts so the student’s genuine personality can come through in their own words. We also work on unseen interpretation, where the student is presented with a photograph or a short poem and asked to share their first thoughts and reasons for their view. Such practice ensures that the candidate is ready to approach the interview with a sense of calm and self-assurance.
For secondary-level students attending Lancaster Academy, the GCSE and IGCSE curriculum requires a deep understanding of literary heritage and the historical context of set texts. A student might examine the theme of identity and ethics in Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, analysing how the writer uses the dystopian setting to comment on morality. We might also explore the gender dynamics in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, where the student looks at how the playwright uses disguise to create dramatic irony. My lessons show the pupil how to structure their essays using PEEL paragraphs, ensuring they provide a synthesis of information and textual evidence to support their critical evaluation. Our work also incorporates extract-based analysis that assists the student in connecting specific language techniques to the wider themes of the play or novel. I have found that this focus on thematic links and character motivations is the key to achieving excellent results in the Literature paper, as it allows for a more thorough exploration of the text.
The Language syllabus is equally important, requiring the student to master both the analysis of non-fiction and the production of original creative writing. A student could use an oxymoron in a persuasive speech to highlight a contradiction in an opposing argument, using contrasting terms to capture the audience's attention. We also spend time on non-fiction analysis, comparing writers’ perspectives and evaluating how they might use a specific lexical set to influence the reader. This work on transactional writing involves understanding the purpose and form of various documents, such as articles or reports, and organising ideas logically to build a strong perspective. By working under timed conditions and using specimen papers, the student becomes familiar with the assessment requirements and grade boundaries of the major exam boards. My professional record is reflected in the positive reviews I have received from families whose children have achieved top results under my guidance.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David tutored our daughter for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
