Academic potential for students at North Beckton Primary or Ellen Wilkinson Primary is supported by a tuition service that targets the requirements of Brampton Manor or St Angela's Ursuline. My name is David and, holding a Bachelor’s in Education and over 20 years of experience, I provide English tuition that prepares students for the 11 plus and 13+ entrance examinations. This work includes the nuances of reading comprehension and verbal reasoning, where we work on vocabulary expansion and the ability to produce a cohesive story. We address the need for sensory imagery and accurate grammar rules in creative writing, ensuring that candidates are prepared for the pressure of selective school entry. By using past papers and focusing on exam-day technique, students build the confidence necessary for a successful application. My students have a strong record of securing places at top schools, a result of their hard work in reviewing homework and practising with CEM and GL assessment materials.

A significant part of this preparation includes interview practice, where we look at how a candidate can express their thoughts clearly and confidently in a formal setting. We work on refining a student’s ability to engage with unexpected questions and to talk about their academic interests in a mature and considered way. This involves helping the student to manage anxiety and to understand the importance of clear expression and eye contact. By improving their confidence and their ability to articulate their ideas, pupils are better equipped to handle the personal interaction required by selective school admissions. These communication skills are invaluable as they move through the education system and into their future careers.

The ability to articulate ideas effectively is a central requirement of the GCSE English Literature curriculum, where students must engage with the broader themes and historical context of the syllabus texts. A student might explore the tragic disintegration and family dynamics in Shakespeare's King Lear, or look at the political allegory and social responsibility in George Orwell's Animal Farm. We work on essay composition and the integration of textual evidence, ensuring that every critical response is well-structured and addresses the writer's intentions. By practising extract-based analysis and refining their ability to analyse quotations, students develop the analytical skills required for excellent GCSE results. I have received many positive testimonials from parents who have noted the progress their children make when they learn to provide insightful literary analysis and criticism.

This conceptual depth is complemented by the practical requirements of the English Language syllabus, where pupils must demonstrate their proficiency in both fiction and non-fiction analysis. We look at how writers use direct address to engage an audience in a persuasive speech or use emotive language to create a specific tone in an article. A student might work on a transactional writing task, such as a report or a formal letter, where they learn to use rhetorical devices to reinforce their central theme. I guide students through the marking criteria of boards like Edexcel and Cambridge IGCSE, ensuring they are well-prepared for the technical standards of the exam. My students consistently achieve high standards through their commitment to careful checking and proofreading.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
