My name is David, and I provide English tutoring for the Bournemouth community, applying more than twenty years of experience to help pupils achieve their goals. The study of English Literature requires a detailed interpretation of the author’s craft and the central themes of the set texts. A student may explore the themes of forgiveness and the supernatural in Shakespeare's The Tempest, connecting the narrative to the Jacobean context of the period. We also examine the character arcs in 19th-century prose, such as Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, where the student might analyse how the writer uses the setting to reflect the internal struggle of the protagonist. By learning to structure essays using clear textual evidence and quotations, the learner develops the ability to produce critical responses that meet the marking criteria of boards like AQA and Edexcel. My Bachelor of Education provides the foundation for these sessions, ensuring that the student can express ideas with the clarity required for grade 9s in the final exams.

The English Language curriculum is equally challenging, requiring students attending Glenmoor Academy or Bournemouth School for Girls to demonstrate a mastery of both fiction and non-fiction analysis. When students work on a descriptive writing task, they might employ an oxymoron to highlight a specific contradiction, such as 'quiet riot', which adds a layer of depth to the atmosphere. This technique is particularly effective in creating a specific sensory atmosphere, which is a key requirement for achieving success in the writing sections. In the realm of transactional formats, we examine how a writer organises ideas in an article or a speech to build a persuasive argument. By identifying the linguistic subtleties in an unseen non-fiction extract, the student learns to evaluate the writer’s methods and perspectives with confidence. My pupils consistently achieve high marks because they learn to manage the requirements of the syllabus while maintaining the professional standards that have led to many positive testimonials.

For primary-level candidates at St Walburga's Primary, the curriculum involves preparing for the competitive entrance exams for prestigious local institutions. Students aiming to secure a place at Bournemouth School or Parkstone Grammar must develop a high level of accuracy in verbal reasoning and reading comprehension. We explore the requirements of GL Assessment and CEM assessment papers, focusing on the precision needed for multiple-choice papers and logic puzzles. When a student is required to produce a story for a written assessment, I teach them how to use personification to bring a setting to life, giving human qualities to inanimate objects to engage the reader. This preparation ensures that the applicant can satisfy the selective criteria of their first-choice school while avoiding common errors in grammar and punctuation. My students consistently gain places at top schools by developing a thorough understanding of the admissions requirements for competitive secondary schools.

Refining the applicant's verbal expression and confidence for the interview constitutes the final stage of the application process for independent schools. We move beyond simple answers by working with the student on justifying an opinion about their favourite authors or explaining why they enjoyed a specific turn in the plot of a book. The applicant learns to identify specific parts of the target school that interest them, such as the music facilities or specific sports clubs, while finding a natural voice that avoids rehearsed scripts. We also practise responding to unseen interpretation tasks, such as a short poem or a photograph, where the candidate shares their first thoughts and provides a reason for their interpretation. By identifying what they will bring to the school community, the candidate shows the admissions board that they are already thinking about being a member of that community. Refining these skills for entry ensures that the candidate can handle unexpected questions and speak confidently about their achievements and goals.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
