Within the Bracknell area, I offer professional English tuition that targets the requirements of both the secondary curriculum and the competitive entry process for top schools. My name is David, and for more than 20 years, I have supported students as they work toward their 11 plus and 13 plus examinations. For students attending Holly Spring Primary or Wooden Hill Primary, the path toward Papplewick or Downe House requires the ability to identify word meanings in context and use synonyms and antonyms for the reasoning papers. A student might use metaphors within their creative writing to create a more sophisticated atmosphere, ensuring that their narrative moves beyond a simple sequence of events. Building foundational skills for independent and grammar school entry also involves developing the sentence variety and proofreading skills needed for written assessments. Integrating a thorough review of past papers and model answers ensures that students in Years 3, 4, and 5 build the technical clarity required for entry, a process grounded in my professional expertise as a Bachelor of Education.

As students reach the final stage of the application process, we move into the verbal skills needed for a successful interview. We spend time looking at how to talk about personal interests, whether that is a love for swimming or a specific book, so the student can move beyond just stating facts. I help them find the reasons why they enjoy these things, encouraging them to explain the challenge of learning a new piece of music or what they find interesting about a certain character’s choices. This ability to provide a reasoned answer is also vital when they are asked why they want to join a particular school. Instead of a generic response, a student might talk about their interest in the science labs or the drama facilities, explaining exactly how they hope to use those spaces. We also practise handling unseen tasks, such as discussing a short poem or a news story, which teaches them to think on their feet and share an immediate, reasoned opinion with an adult. By working through these conversations, the student builds the self-assurance to be themselves and speak clearly to an interviewer.

As students move into their GCSE and IGCSE studies at schools like Brakenhale School or Garth Hill College, they must adapt to a curriculum where the interpretation of literary texts is balanced by the technical requirements of language production. For the English Language papers, pupils need to master various transactional formats, such as formal letters that use rhetorical strategies to engage the reader. Within a descriptive piece, a writer might employ pathetic fallacy to mirror a character’s mood through the setting, whereas a discursive task requires tools like hyperbole to emphasise a specific argument. This shift from an imaginative mindset toward a more logical approach is essential when identifying how a writer's methods shape an unseen text, as required by boards such as OCR and AQA. Evaluating these choices allows the pupil to approach the final marking criteria with a comprehensive understanding of the examiner's perspective.

Expanding the study into English Literature, the curriculum allows students at secondary schools such as The Holt or St Crispin's to demonstrate their interpretative skills through the exploration of dramatic structure. A student may examine the themes of fate and conflict in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, or perhaps explore the social responsibility and post-war context of J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls. Essays on these plays demand well-evidenced responses that link character motivations to the wider historical context of the time instead of simply recounting the narrative. By breaking down quotations and evaluating the writer’s intentions, pupils learn to construct a clear argument that satisfies the marking criteria of the syllabus. I have received many positive testimonials from parents who have seen their children achieve excellent results through this thorough exploration of the texts.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
