My name is David, and I hold a Bachelor of Education alongside more than 20 years of experience in the profession, providing a professional English tutoring service to students in the Brandon area. For pupils at Breckland School, the study of English involves the dual-syllabus of Language and Literature, requiring a wide range of analytical and productive skills. In our Literature sessions, we explore the works of poets like Lord Byron, where we might analyse 'The Destruction of Sennacherib' to understand the use of rhythm and poetic voice. We also look at modern drama, such as J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls, discussing the themes of social responsibility and the historical context of the post-war era. The student works on essay composition and structure, ensuring they include key quotations and textual support to satisfy the assessment requirements of boards like Eduqas or CIE. By analysing the writer's intentions and the sensory atmosphere of a scene, the learner develops a critical response that demonstrates a detailed interpretation of the set texts. These exercises ensure that the student is well-prepared for extract questions and can build a convincing argument that meets the marking criteria of the exam board.

The English Language syllabus requires a balanced focus on both fiction analysis and the production of original writing in various transactional and creative formats. During our sessions, we might look at how a student uses juxtaposition to contrast two opposite ideas in a piece of narrative writing, creating a sense of conflict or tension for the reader. We also work on language analysis questions, where the learner follows a process of explaining how a writer uses specific techniques to create an effect, such as the character or place being presented in a particular way. In a transactional piece like a formal letter or article, the student learns to adapt their tone and register to suit the intended audience while maintaining a clear expression of their ideas. By working with past exam papers and model answers, the pupil understands the grade boundaries and how to achieve excellent GCSE results through technical accuracy. This phase involves identifying stylistic choices and evaluating methods used by the writer to influence the reader's response in unseen fiction and non-fiction extracts. The student's ability to express ideas clearly is refined through careful checking and a thorough review of homework, ensuring they meet the assessment requirements of the final examination.

For younger pupils attending Forest Academy or Glade Academy, I offer preparation for competitive entrance exams for local independent and grammar schools. Many families in the area target Year 7 entry at prestigious institutions such as The Perse or Stephen Perse, which requires a strong performance in reading comprehension and verbal reasoning. We work on inference and deduction, helping the candidate understand character feelings and word meanings in context during advanced comprehension tasks. In the written assessments, the applicant learns to use similes to create vivid comparisons in a descriptive passage, ensuring their prose is engaging and technically sound. We also practice reasoning tasks and word associations to ensure the child is prepared for the GL multiple-choice papers. During the primary years, preparing for the admissions requirements of these schools involves mastering sentence variety and avoiding common errors in grammar and punctuation. By completing a thorough review of homework and practising with past exam papers, the candidate builds the skills needed for securing places at top schools.

Following the successful completion of the written assessments, my sessions include interview practice to help the candidate prepare for the final stage of the application process. We work on hobbies and personal interests by helping the applicant explain why they enjoy a particular activity, moving beyond a simple list of facts to share their genuine personality. The applicant also practices responding to unseen interpretation tasks, such as sharing their first thoughts on a short poem or photograph and providing a reason for their viewpoint. We work on current events by discussing a recent news topic that has interested them, helping the pupil express their ideas clearly and naturally. This activity involves guiding the candidate to identify specific parts of the target school that interest them, such as music facilities or sports clubs, to show they are thinking about the school community. Parent comments frequently mention how this preparation helps the student speak in their own words and present their genuine interests to the admissions board.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
