English Tutor Canons Ashby | GCSE & 11+ Preparation

Supporting students through the requirements of the English Language and English Literature syllabus, my name is David and I provide English tutor services to the Canons Ashby community with over twenty years of experience. For pupils attending Sponne School or Chenderit School, the curriculum necessitates a command of fiction and non-fiction analysis alongside the production of original transactional formats. Within the literature section, a learner might examine Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre to understand how the author uses the historical context to explore Victorian morality and social class. Similarly, the study of Benjamin Zephaniah / Lemn Sissay's Refugee Boy allows for a detailed interpretation of political themes and the struggle for identity in a modern British context. Analysing quotations involves breaking down specific phrases to see how the writer’s choices impact the tone of the work. By developing a clear thematic link between an extract and the wider text, students can apply literary techniques to work toward top results.

Within the English Language curriculum, my Bachelor of Education allows me to guide students through the production of original narrative writing and diverse transactional formats such as speeches or opinion pieces. For non-fiction tasks, a writer might employ anaphora to build a sense of momentum by repeating a specific word at the start of consecutive phrases. Shifting to descriptive writing, the student could employ an oxymoron to highlight the internal conflict of a character by placing two contradictory terms side by side. Every response is refined through grammar and punctuation checks to ensure the work remains cohesive under timed practice. Integrating these linguistic devices into a structured argument allows the learner to satisfy the marking criteria of major exam boards such as AQA or Eduqas.

The process of preparing for competitive entrance examinations involves candidates from Woodford Halse CE Primary and Culworth CE Primary as they target a place at Stowe or Bloxham. This preparation encompasses advanced reading comprehension tasks where applicants must use inference and deduction to interpret the text and answer with evidence. Within the creative writing component, a student may use alliteration to draw attention to specific words and establish a particular rhythm in their story. Grammar rules and sentence variety are addressed through vocabulary expansion to ensure the work remains cohesive during examinations in Year 6. High professional standards are consistently maintained throughout the admissions process, a fact that is frequently validated by the positive reviews I receive from parents.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
