As an English tutor working with families in Charing Cross, I understand the high expectations placed on students attending schools like Soho Parish or those aiming for admission to King's College School. My name is David, and I offer a tuition service that covers the full range of English skills, from the 11 plus and 13 plus entrance exams to the requirements of GCSE and IGCSE. For younger pupils, the selective entry process often involves a combination of verbal reasoning, comprehension, and written assessments. We might work on how to use descriptive language in a story or how to manage the requirements of GL multiple-choice papers. My students consistently secure places at top schools, and I have received positive feedback from parents regarding the progress made under my guidance.

These core skills are further developed as students at Grey Coat Hospital or Westminster City School move into their GCSE years, where the curriculum demands a more nuanced approach to English Language. A student might be required to produce a persuasive speech or an article, where the use of a tricolon or direct address can help to engage an audience. Moving to the fiction component, we might look at how a writer uses sibilance or an extended metaphor to create a specific effect in an extract. I teach students how to manage the content of their transactional writing, ensuring that their arguments are logical and well-supported. By working through past exam papers and model answers, I ensure that students are prepared for the requirements of major exam boards like OCR or Eduqas, often leading to top results.

The study of literature expands these analytical skills, as a student could be asked to explore the poetry of John Agard. We might look at how the writer uses colloquial language or a specific poetic structure to convey themes of identity and culture. The tuition also encompasses the study of a 19th-century novel or a Shakespearean tragedy, where the student might examine the historical and social context to better understand character motivation. I provide guidance on how to structure PETAL paragraphs and how to use textual evidence to support a critical response. Whether analysing unseen poetry or a modern British drama, the goal is to develop a clear expression of ideas that meets the strict criteria of the examiner. This approach ensures that every student I tutor is well-prepared for the challenges of their GCSE exams and beyond.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
