The community in Chickerell has high educational standards, and as an English tutor with a Bachelor of Education, I provide the professional support required to meet these goals. My name is David, and for more than twenty years, I have helped students achieve their goals through a thorough approach to the 11 plus and GCSE curriculum. For pupils currently at Chickerell Primary Academy, the path to local selective school entry requires a mastery of verbal reasoning and advanced comprehension. We work through the ISEB pre-test requirements, helping the candidate develop the speed and accuracy needed for multiple-choice papers and logic puzzles. When preparing for target schools like Budmouth Academy or potential independent school entrance, a student learns to plan a narrative that uses adjectives to create a specific atmosphere, selecting words that add texture to their descriptive writing. This process of vocabulary expansion and sentence variety ensures that the pupil can handle the admissions requirements for Year 7 entry with confidence. My students consistently gain places at top schools because they learn to avoid common errors in grammar and punctuation while maintaining the quality of their expression.

Within the Literature syllabus, the interpretation of texts requires a deep understanding of historical and social context and the authorial intent behind the work. A student may explore the themes of power and corruption in George Orwell's Animal Farm, identifying how the modern prose reflects the political landscape of the era. Similarly, we might examine the 19th-century prose of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, where the student analyses the character motivations and the social commentary on poverty. By practising extract questions and learning to structure essays using well-evidenced quotations, the pupil builds the thematic depth required for success. We also look at the rhyme scheme and poetic structure of anthology poems, ensuring the student can compare writers’ methods with confidence. These sessions involve annotating texts and using specimen papers to ensure the student is familiar with the Assessment Objectives of the board.

Once students move into secondary education at schools like Wey Valley Academy, the focus shifts to the dual requirements of GCSE Language and Literature. The English Language curriculum requires a balanced mastery of both fiction and non-fiction, where students must demonstrate their ability to analyse a writer’s methods and produce their own original work. When crafting a persuasive speech or an article, a writer might employ pathetic fallacy to mirror a character’s internal emotions through the external weather, creating a cohesive and evocative atmosphere. This technique is a key part of transactional writing, where tone and register must be carefully managed to meet the assessment requirements. By identifying the structural techniques and linguistic devices in an unseen fiction extract, the student learns to construct a detailed interpretation that will lead to grade 9s in the final papers. Maintaining this focus on accuracy ensures that the student can meet the requirements of the final grade while incorporating the positive feedback I have received from parents.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
