Providing English tuition for the community in Christchurch is a role I approach with my Bachelor of Education and more than two decades of teaching experience. My name is David, and I offer a comprehensive service that addresses the requirements of the GCSE and IGCSE curriculum for students attending Twynham School or Highcliffe School. The requirements of English Literature involve a detailed interpretation of central themes and the historical context of the set texts. A student may examine the tragedy and character motivations within Shakespeare's Macbeth, identifying how the Jacobean context influenced the portrayal of ambition and guilt. This thematic exploration extends to the study of modern drama, such as Alan Bennett's The History Boys, where the student might analyse how the writer uses the setting to reflect the conflicting perspectives on education. By learning to structure essays using well-evidenced quotations, the pupil builds the analytical skills needed for success in the final Literature papers. My students achieve top results because they learn to manage the requirements of the board while maintaining the professional standards that lead to the positive testimonials I receive from parents.

The English Language curriculum addresses both the analysis of texts and the production of original writing. When students work on a transactional piece such as a formal letter or an opinion piece, they might use a semantic field of legal terms to reinforce a specific tone of authority throughout the writing. This deliberate word choice is a vital part of building a perspective and engaging the reader, which is essential for meeting the marking criteria of boards like AQA and Edexcel. By identifying the linguistic subtleties and structural shifts in an unseen fiction extract, the student develops the ability to evaluate the writer’s methods from an examiner’s perspective. These skills are a key requirement for achieving grade 9s, and we use past exam papers to ensure the student is comfortable working under timed conditions.

For primary pupils at Christchurch Junior School, the curriculum involves preparation for the competitive entrance exams for prestigious grammar and independent schools. Students targeting a place at Bournemouth School must master the requirements of GL Assessment multiple-choice papers, particularly in verbal reasoning and reading comprehension. We work through the logic puzzles and vocabulary expansion exercises that characterise these tests, ensuring the candidate can answer with evidence and precision. When producing a story for a written assessment, I guide the applicant in the use of adverbs to modify the action and create a specific atmosphere, helping them to avoid common errors in spelling and punctuation. This process of vocabulary expansion and sentence variety ensures that the pupil can handle the admissions requirements for Year 7 entry with self-assurance. My students consistently gain places at top schools by developing the speed and accuracy needed for competitive secondary schools.

Interview practice is the final stage of the application process for independent schools, where I guide the candidate in finding a natural voice and expressing a viewpoint clearly. We work on discussing a book the student has enjoyed or justifying their interest in specific extracurricular interests, such as sports or music. The student learns to talk through their problem-solving process for logical reasoning questions, allowing the interviewer to see how they think and communicate. We also practise responding to unseen interpretation tasks, such as a short poem or a photograph, where the candidate shares their first thoughts and provides a reason for their interpretation. By identifying what they will bring to the school community, the candidate shows the admissions board that they are already thinking about being a member of that community. The work on these admissions tasks ensures that the student is ready to share a genuine perspective on their achievements and goals during the interview.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
