The academic path for students in Coulsdon often involves a clear commitment to mastering both the classics and the modern requirements of the English curriculum. My name is David, and with a Bachelor's in Education and more than two decades of experience, I support students in their study of GCSE English Literature. A pupil could examine the scientific and moral boundaries explored in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, analysing how the 19th-century gothic tradition informs the creature's tragic narrative. The study of poetry may also include the work of Robert Browning, where the student must explain how the use of the dramatic monologue reveals the complex psychology of the speaker. I help learners structure their critical responses using the PETAL paragraph method, ensuring that every point is supported by precise quotations and a clear understanding of the writer’s intentions. This academic rigour has led to my students receiving excellent GCSE results and reaching high standards of literary analysis.

The ability to analyse a writer's craft is a skill that translates directly to the English Language paper, where students must also produce their own original work. For those at Woodcote High or attending Chipstead Valley, the syllabus requires a polished approach to transactional writing, such as the composition of articles and persuasive speeches. A student might use polysyndeton to emphasise the scale of an issue. Shifting to imaginative tasks, the learner could also employ symbolic motifs to add depth to a descriptive piece of writing. I assist students in mastering the requirements of the Edexcel and OCR boards, focusing on the clarity of their expression and the careful checking of their grammar and punctuation. By providing model answers and feedback on past papers, I ensure that students are fully prepared for the technical demands of the curriculum.

Beyond the secondary level, I also provide a comprehensive service for those preparing for the 13 plus and other competitive entrance exams. For students aiming to join the student body at institutions like Whitgift or Croydon High, I offer targeted support in vocabulary expansion and advanced reading comprehension. These sessions help children build the confidence needed for independent school entry, ensuring they can tackle challenging written assessments under timed conditions. My approach involves a regular review of homework and the practice of creative writing techniques that allow a student's unique voice to emerge. Over 20 years, I have seen many of my pupils secure places at top schools, a track record that is frequently noted in the positive feedback I receive from the local community.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
