GCSE English & Entrance Exams Tutor Dilton Marsh

Providing English tuition to families in Dilton Marsh involves a deep understanding of the local educational landscape, and I, David, draw upon my Bachelor’s degree in Education to help pupils meet the standards of selective secondary schools. I work with applicants from primary schools such as Dilton Marsh Church of England Primary or Westbury Leigh Church of England Primary to meet the requirements of selective school entry through a thorough curriculum. Within my sessions, I address the skill of pinpointing word meanings in context and providing well-evidenced answers within comprehension tasks. When faced with a passage describing a busy marketplace, the candidate identifies the word 'bustle' to signify more than mere movement, explaining that the author uses the term to suggest a rhythmic, purposeful energy among the traders. When interpreting the text, pupils learn to justify a particular choice of evidence, such as when they identify the phrase 'the fruit hung bountifully from the low branches' to suggest a landscape of abundance rather than mere growth. For the narrative writing component, I help candidates use figurative language to create a sense of atmosphere that engages the reader. For instance, a pupil might write that 'the snowdrop nodded its head in the cold breeze', using personification to create a sense of fragile persistence within a harsh winter environment. Refining these skills helps applicants meet the competitive standards of the admissions process while aiming for a place at their preferred secondary school such as Warminster School or King Edward’s School Bath, and I also support candidates with interview preparation and practice as they approach the final stage of the application process.
The study of GCSE English Literature involves a thematic exploration of set texts, ranging from the social commentary of Victorian prose to the subtleties of the poetic voice. My work with students, which spans over twenty years, addresses the thematic depth of Victorian prose and the historical context of poetry. Secondary-level students attending Matravers School encounter a syllabus where the analysis of prose involves examining the writer's intentions in Victorian mystery, addressing how a pupil might structure their PETAL paragraphs to incorporate textual support. My tuition encompasses the analysis of central themes and the writer's craft within set texts such as Wilkie Collins’s The Woman in White. I discuss the way Collins builds tension through domestic details, such as when the narrator observes 'the winding-sheet which the ice and snow had already woven for the world', where the student must link the Victorian Gothic atmosphere to the character's internal dread. We might also explore the patriotic imagery and historical context of Rupert Brooke’s 'The Soldier', considering how the poetic voice reflects the values of the era. The student examines how Brooke utilises the landscape as a symbol of identity, focusing on the line 'A body of England’s, breathing English air', to discuss how the poet connects the physical form to national heritage. Students learn to use formal accuracy in their critical responses, providing textual support for every point they make in their essays for Paper 1 and Paper 2. Constructing these responses allows students to develop the ability to build well-evidenced arguments that satisfy the assessment requirements of the exam boards.
Pupils at The John of Gaunt School must also satisfy the marking criteria for English Language, which includes the summary of similarities and differences between two non-fiction sources. In a task comparing perspectives on maritime history, I guide students as they identify how two different writers describe the challenge of a disaster at sea. The pupil distinguishes how one writer views the shipwreck as 'a monstrous intrusion upon the silence of the coast' while a second source regards the same event as 'a mechanical failure of wood and iron', allowing the student to explain how the two authors differ in their emotional detachment from the event. In my sessions, a pupil might recognise how a writer uses descriptive details, such as how a character set 'his shoulders against the weight of the timber until the grain pressed into the skin', using evocative language to convey the objective reality of physical exertion. When producing transactional formats such as reviews, students learn to build a convincing perspective on topics like rail travel. When crafting a review of a modern rail journey, the learner explores the contrast between the efficiency of the service and the sterile environment of the carriage, using the phrase 'the landscape moved like a silent film behind the double-glazing' to evoke a sense of detachment from the natural world. A learner might engage the reader by stating 'you must understand the fortitude required to survive such a winter', using direct address to create a personal connection. By working under timed conditions with past papers from boards such as AQA and OCR, students refine their exam technique and time management to satisfy the requirements of the National Curriculum. Parental comments regarding the progress of my students reflect the results achieved throughout my English tuition.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.
David

David tutored our daughter for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
