My name is David, and I provide a professional service as an English tutor for the Dunchurch community as a Bachelor of Education. Students move through the GCSE curriculum at secondary schools like Ashlawn School or Rugby Free Secondary School, where they must meet the dual requirements of English Language and English Literature. I have over 20 years of experience, a background that informs the detailed guidance I provide on the marking criteria of major examination boards like AQA and Edexcel. In the Language paper, we explore transactional formats including persuasive speeches and formal letters, where the clarity of argument is essential. A writer might use polysyndeton to create a sense of accumulation within their work. By using multiple conjunctions in quick succession, the student makes a list of points feel extensive, which can be an effective way to engage the reader's interest. This development of vocabulary selection and cohesive devices ensures that every report, article, or review meets the technical standards required for grade 9s.

The Literature component of the curriculum involves a detailed interpretation of modern prose and Shakespearean drama. A student may explore the themes of social responsibility and political context in J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls, evaluating how the playwright uses the social hierarchy of the time to drive the narrative. This process involves the detailed interpretation of extract questions and the use of key quotations to build a well-evidenced critical response. We also examine the themes of power and leadership through Shakespeare's Richard III, evaluating how authorial intent is revealed through the character arcs. By practising essay composition and working on thematic links between texts, the pupil learns to communicate their detailed interpretation of the writer's craft. This work on literary analysis is also applied to the study of famous poets, such as Emily Dickinson, where the use of imagery and symbolism creates layers of meaning.

For pupils currently at Dunchurch Boughton CE Junior School, the goal of independent and grammar school entry requires a meticulous approach to both comprehension and creative writing. Many families target a place at Lawrence Sheriff School or Rugby School, which involves a multi-stage assessment process beginning with the logic of verbal reasoning. In our sessions, we work on reading comprehension, where the candidate practices answering with evidence and identifying literal and implied meanings. During their narrative writing, a pupil might use a simile to create a vivid comparison between two objects. By using words like 'as' or 'like', the writer helps the reader visualise a character or a setting more clearly, showing the examiner that they can use linguistic devices for a specific effect. We also practice the logic and pattern-seeking required for multiple-choice papers to ensure a complete preparation for the admissions cycle. The effectiveness of this tuition is regularly reflected in the parent comments I receive, which highlight the progress and confidence my students develop in securing places at prestigious schools.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
