GCSE English & Entrance Exams Tutor East Sussex

Across the county of East Sussex, the demand for high-quality English tutoring remains constant, and I have received many parental comments that validate my approach to the curriculum. I am David, and I bring over 20 years of experience to every session, helping students to prepare for the 11 plus and 13 plus entrance examinations. For those currently attending local schools such as Ocklynge Junior and aiming to secure a future placement at Eastbourne College, the preparation involves advanced comprehension and creative writing techniques. A student might use sensory imagery to create a more atmospheric and engaging story, ensuring they catch the eye of the examiners during the selection process. This work is about building the profile required for admission, and I am pleased with the many students who have successfully secured places at top schools through this thorough grounded study.

As students move into the secondary phase of their education at Gildredge House, Willingdon Community School, or Cavendish School, I establish a framework that incorporates the full breadth of both English Language and English Literature before we move to specific technical tasks. The English Language paper requires proficiency in both fiction and non-fiction analysis, a duality that ensures the student can handle any text encountered in the exam. A student might employ superlatives to add emphasis to a persuasive article or a speech, ensuring their argument is both memorable and convincing. We also work on the production of creative pieces, where the use of diverse sentence structures and vivid language is essential for meeting the mark schemes of boards like AQA and Cambridge IGCSE. By refining their analytical skills, students are better equipped to express their ideas clearly and achieve top results.

The study of English Literature is a vital component of the secondary years, offering students the chance to explore the historical context and central themes of great works. A pupil might be tasked with analysing the Gothic elements and social commentary within Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, exploring how the protagonist's journey reflects the constraints of Victorian society. Since analytical skills are transferable, this could be balanced by the study of Shakespeare's Hamlet, where the student might evaluate the character's internal struggles and the play's broader themes of revenge and morality. By practising extract questions and refining their essay composition, the learner learns to integrate quotations effectively and provide a critical response. My students consistently achieve excellent GCSE results, with many attaining Grade 9s, as they learn to meet the high standards demanded by the examination boards.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
