For parents in the Eckington area who are seeking to support their children’s educational progress, I, David, have established a comprehensive English tuition service that incorporates my Bachelor’s degree in Education to ensure that every student meets the strict marking criteria of major examination boards. My lessons encompass the study of both fiction and non-fiction texts, where I guide the student through the complexities of interpreting an author's craft within an unseen extract rather than just summarising the plot. Part of this work involves a detailed comparison of writers’ perspectives, where the learner identifies how two different authors might present the same topic through varying tones or stylistic choices. When responding to an evaluation question that asks to what extent they agree with a statement about a character, the learner might explore how the writer influences their opinion by selecting relevant textual evidence, such as a specific shift in tone, and explaining the resulting impact on the reader's sympathies. Alongside these analytical requirements, the curriculum places equal weight on the production of original writing, which necessitates a mastery of the expressive demands found in narrative and descriptive tasks. In crafting a story, a learner could employ polysyndeton, perhaps writing ‘the rain drummed on the roof and the wind rattled the windows and the thunder shook the foundations’, to create a sense of relentless, overlapping sensory pressure that builds a frantic atmosphere. I also provide guidance on the drafting of transactional formats like speeches or formal letters, helping the student to effectively communicate a persuasive perspective to a specific audience while working under timed conditions. The positive testimonials I receive from families serve as an objective professional validation of the results achieved in my sessions, which have helped many students at Eckington School achieve top results.

Beyond the requirements of the Language syllabus, the English Literature curriculum introduces the challenge of interpreting complex set texts such as Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and Tanika Gupta’s The Empress. Drawing upon a professional background of over 20 years, I assist students in developing the skills required for practising extract questions, where they must connect close-up linguistic details to the wider thematic depth of the play or novel. In my sessions, we look at how a playwright structures a scene to build tension, such as the initial meeting in The Taming of the Shrew, where the quick-fire dialogue reflects a battle of wits and social status. A learner might also explore the theme of social hierarchy in Gupta’s play, examining how the playwright uses dramatic irony—perhaps by allowing the audience to witness the secret vulnerabilities of the Rani while her colonial masters see only a servant—to highlight the differing perspectives of characters within the colonial setting. My lessons involve identifying key quotations and constructing clear PETAL paragraphs that directly answer the exam question to satisfy the Assessment Objectives of boards such as AQA or Edexcel. By exploring the historical and social context of these set texts alongside the character motivations, the student learns to construct a well-evidenced critical response that demonstrates a deep understanding of the writer’s intentions.

Parallel to the secondary-level curriculum, the service provides preparation for 11+ and 13+ entrance examinations for candidates at Marsh Lane Primary or Camms Endowed CE Primary looking to secure a place at Sheffield High School. The practice involves a thorough review of reading comprehension, where the student learns to provide a point and evidence when interpreting character feelings—such as the growing sense of isolation felt by an elderly narrator—in an unseen passage. The tuition addresses the precision required for GL multiple-choice papers and verbal reasoning, where the student learns to identify word associations and solve logic puzzles to meet the admissions requirements of selective institutions. By working through vocabulary expansion tasks, candidates learn to distinguish between subtle shades of meaning, ensuring they can select the most appropriate synonym when under the pressure of a timed assessment. In the written assessments, a candidate handles the task of creating an atmosphere through sensory imagery, perhaps describing ‘the smell of damp earth and the cold bite of the winter air’ to immerse the reader in a specific setting. Handled as the final stage of the application process, my sessions include interview practice to help students speak confidently about their extracurricular interests. By demonstrating the depth of their interpretation and the clarity of their written expression across every part of the exam paper, my students consistently gain places at top schools.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
