I provide professional English tutoring in Great Missenden for students who are aiming to achieve the highest standards in their secondary education. My name is David, and I hold a Bachelor’s in Education, which supports my teaching with pupils from Great Missenden CE School and Prestwood Junior School. For those children who are targeting a successful application to Pipers Corner or other selective institutions, we look at the requirements of reasoning and written work. This often includes the ISEB pre-test as an initial screening, followed by written assessments in creative writing and comprehension. When crafting a story, a student might use alliteration to create a specific rhythm, or use personification to ground a setting in the reader's mind, ensuring that their descriptive language is both vivid and effective. We also incorporate interview preparation into the lessons, helping the child to speak about their favourite books and authors with confidence. Successful independent and grammar school entry depends on the ability to express ideas clearly and manage the stresses of the assessment process.

The curriculum for GCSE and IGCSE students requires a thorough understanding of both fiction and non-fiction analysis. Providing support for both GCSE language and literature involves a detailed exploration of various texts and formats. Students at secondary schools such as The Misbourne or Dr Challoner’s High School must be able to produce original work in a variety of transactional formats. When writing a persuasive piece, for example, a student might employ direct address to establish an immediate connection with the audience, ensuring the tone of the piece is appropriately engaging. We also work on imaginative tasks, where pupils learn to employ structural techniques in narrative writing to sustain the reader’s interest. I have received positive testimonials from many parents who have seen their children achieve top results by refining their use of linguistic devices and improving their essay composition. My twenty years of experience ensures that students are well-prepared for the strict criteria of major examination boards.

In the study of English Literature, students explore the themes and contexts of a wide range of texts. A student may examine the industrial context and social protest themes in Thomas Hardy's poem 'The Convergence of the Twain'. Using a different thematic lens, they might explore the layered social responsibility in Arthur Miller's The Crucible. We work on analysing quotations to find the deeper meaning in a text and showing the student how to connect these details back to the writer's intentions. This involves teaching the student how to structure their essays using PEEL paragraphs and ensuring that their work meets the requirements of major exam boards like AQA or OCR. My students consistently achieve excellent GCSE results by applying the instruction provided and ensuring that their written work is well-evidenced and clearly expressed.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
