My name is David, and I provide English tuition within the vicinity of Green Park, drawing upon a Bachelor of Education and more than twenty years of experience in the classroom and as a private tutor. The requirements of the GCSE and IGCSE syllabuses address a high level of proficiency in both English Language and English Literature, which I explore through a thorough exploration of the marking criteria set by boards such as AQA or Edexcel. Within the English Language component, students might explore the specific features of transactional writing by crafting a formal letter or a persuasive speech, where they manage the arrangement of their ideas to engage a specific audience. This process involves the selection of specific linguistic tools, such as the use of sibilance to create a particular auditory effect or the careful ordering of points to sustain a coherent argument. By evaluating how a writer handles information in an unseen text, a pupil learns to apply similar methods to their own original compositions, ensuring that their written assessments meet the standards required for Grade 9s.

The study of literature provides another dimension to this academic work, where students might examine the historical and social context of the texts they are reading. A student could be required to produce a detailed analysis of Shakespeare's Henry V, looking at how the playwright portrays leadership and national identity through the character of the king. In these sessions, we might also look at the poetry of Thomas Hardy, where the student can learn to identify how the writer’s intentions are reflected in the rhythmic and structural choices of the verse. Practising extract questions allows a learner to become comfortable with close textual analysis, while essay writing practice helps them to build well-evidenced arguments that incorporate relevant quotations. This level of preparation is designed to ensure that students at schools such as Westminster City School or The Grey Coat Hospital are equipped to meet the analytical requirements of the GCSE curriculum, and I have received much positive feedback regarding the progress students make under this methodology.

For younger pupils, the competitive entrance examinations for Year 7 entry require a distinct set of skills that go beyond the standard primary curriculum. Students aiming for a place at institutions like St Paul's School or Westminster School work through advanced comprehension tasks that test their ability to infer meaning and evaluate a writer's choices under timed conditions. Preparation for these assessments includes verbal reasoning and the expansion of vocabulary to handle the shuffled sentences and synonyms found in many multiple-choice papers. My students have spent time refining their clear expression and descriptive writing techniques during our sessions. By working through past exam papers, a candidate becomes accustomed to the environment of the test, allowing them to approach the assessment process with a sense of readiness and academic assurance.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
