By serving the Heanor community as an English tuition provider for over two decades, I, David, having obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Education, address the specific requirements of the 11 plus and 13 plus entrance examinations. For candidates currently attending Mundy Junior School or Loscoe CE Primary, the preparation for selective school entry bridges the gap between the mechanics of GL multiple-choice papers and the expressive challenges of written assessments. Instead of merely naming a task, a learner might work on advanced comprehension tasks by investigating a passage where a 'stagnant, iron-grey mist' over a moorland is used to establish an immediate sense of isolation, allowing the pupil to provide the specific textual evidence needed to justify a perceptive deduction about a character’s internal loneliness. Moving from these interpretive requirements to the production of original prose, a candidate could use metaphors to elevate their narrative writing, perhaps describing a character's determination as a 'stubborn root clinching the mountain soil' to suggest a strength that remains unmoved by the surrounding chaos. My students consistently gain places at top schools like Derby Grammar by equipping themselves with the vocabulary expansion and exam-day technique necessary for successful admissions.

Moving from the standardised logic of entrance tests to the interpretive demands of the secondary curriculum, the English Literature syllabus encompasses the study of modern drama such as Dennis Kelly’s DNA and the work of poets like Maya Angelou. I assist students at Heanor Gate Spencer Academy in identifying the writer’s intentions within these texts, helping them to connect historical and social context to the central themes of identity and social responsibility. A student might investigate the poetic voice in Angelou’s 'Caged Bird' to see how the poet manages the tone by contrasting the free bird that 'leaps on the back of the wind' with the captive bird trapped behind 'bars of rage', an image that manages to evoke the physical and psychological constraints of oppression. In a similar vein, when exploring the character motivations in DNA, the student could analyse how Phil’s chilling silence and his eventual use of commands are used to present a sudden and unsettling shift in power within the group. The practice involves teaching the student how to structure paragraphs using clear textual evidence to satisfy the requirements of exam boards like AQA or CIE. By exploring the character arcs and author’s craft within these set texts, the student develops the literary analysis skills necessary to achieve top results.

Parallel to the study of drama and poetry, the GCSE English Language syllabus requires a balance between the interpretation of unseen fiction and the production of transactional formats. Drawing upon my extensive classroom experience, I guide the learner through the complexities of identifying stylistic techniques and structural shifts when they are asked to track a writer’s argument or summarise main ideas in a non-fiction analysis. While these analytical tasks require a forensic look at an author's methods, the student's own composition work demands a different expressive capability, such as using anaphora to manage the pacing and impact of a speech. For example, a student might repeat a phrase such as 'It was the day the world stopped. It was the day the clocks failed.' to build a sense of inescapable dread at the start of a narrative. In a descriptive task, a learner could employ juxtaposition by placing 'the clinical, sterile hum of a modern hospital' against 'the chaotic, fragrant sprawl of a wildflower meadow', highlighting the jarring shift between artificial order and natural disorder to engage the reader. My lessons involve a synthesis of information and a thorough review of past papers to ensure the student can manage their time effectively across both Paper 1 and Paper 2. I provide testimonials as an objective reflection of the consistent progress my students achieve while working towards the strict criteria of major examination boards.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
