GCSE English & Entrance Exams Tutor Horsham

Holding a Bachelor of Education and more than 20 years of experience, I provide a service in Horsham that prioritises the balanced development of skills across both English Language and Literature. My name is David and I provide students at local schools like Tanbridge House or Bohunt School with the tools they need to master the GCSE and IGCSE syllabus through a comprehensive study of the marking criteria. In the Language papers, students engage with both fiction and non-fiction analysis to understand how writers might use techniques such as anaphora or juxtaposition to convey their perspectives to an audience. We also explore transactional writing through the production of articles or speeches, where the student might employ a tricolon to increase the persuasive power of their argument. This thorough preparation ensures that pupils are ready for the strict criteria of major examination boards, and go on to achieve excellent GCSE results.

The study of literature offers a different set of challenges, involving the close reading of prose, drama, and poetry to uncover deeper layers of meaning within the set texts. A student might explore the Victorian morality presented in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, analysing how the author uses setting to reflect the internal state of the characters. We could also examine the tragic trajectory of Shakespeare’s Othello, looking at how the playwright uses dramatic irony and symbolism to build tension throughout the play. By practising extract questions and analysing quotations, students develop the skills needed to produce well-evidenced essays that meet the requirements of examiners. I have received many positive reviews from parents who have seen their children’s confidence improve through this structured professional support.

For primary-aged pupils at Horsham Manor Primary or Shelley Primary who are targeting entry into competitive secondary schools such as Christ’s Hospital, I provide comprehensive preparation for entrance exams. This work involves mastering multiple-choice papers and GL Assessment formats while also developing the creative writing techniques needed for written assessments. We look at reading comprehension in detail, ensuring that students can answer questions accurately and with the necessary depth of understanding. Pupils also practise their proofreading of spelling, punctuation, and grammar to ensure their work is polished, which is vital for securing places at top schools in the West Sussex area.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
