For those residing in Hungerford, the transition to secondary education is often a period that requires expert support for the 11 plus and 13 plus processes. My name is David, and with over twenty years of experience and a Bachelor of Education, I provide a comprehensive service for students aiming to secure a place at Winchester College or Downe House. For candidates currently attending Hungerford Primary School or other local schools, the initial preparation involves mastering the ISEB pre-test and other multiple-choice papers. These preliminary assessments demand a high level of accuracy in reading comprehension and verbal reasoning, where students learn to manage shades of meaning and word associations. We look at strategies for answering questions based on evidence in the passage, ensuring that the candidate can handle advanced comprehension tasks that require both inference and deduction. If a pupil is targeting a school with a written exam, we work on creating an atmosphere within a story through sensory imagery and the careful use of descriptive language.

Successful performance in the written papers is followed by the final stage of applying, which is the interview. We spend time on interview practice, helping the student to move beyond simple descriptions of their hobbies or achievements toward a more reasoned explanation of their perspectives. An applicant might discuss a book they have recently enjoyed, explaining why they were drawn to a particular character or how the author manages the plot. We also work on their ability to respond to unseen material, such as a short poem or a current news topic, ensuring they can articulate the justifications behind their thoughts clearly. This work helps in building self-assurance, allowing the student to express a viewpoint on their favourite subject or their reasons for wanting to join a specific school community. By guiding the student to express their thoughts clearly, they build the confidence needed to respond to the interviewer’s questions with authenticity.

For older students, such as those attending John O’Gaunt School, the curriculum involves a detailed study of the GCSE English Language and Literature papers. The requirements of major boards like AQA and Edexcel involve the evaluation of both fiction and non-fiction texts, where pupils must identify structural shifts and cohesive devices. In their own writing, learners are encouraged to use techniques such as modals to create a particular tone in a persuasive argument, or to employ juxtaposition to highlight the differences between characters in a narrative. We work on the production of transactional writing, focusing on how a student manages information to ensure the final piece is both clear and convincing. Refining the drafting process ensures that every report or letter they produce is technically sound, contributing towards the highest levels of achievement.

The study of Literature requires a student to move between the close-up analysis of specific parts of a text and its broader historical context. A student might examine the unsettling dystopian themes in Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, or investigate the social responsibility and post-war context portrayed in J.B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls. We also work on stanza-by-stanza analysis of unseen poetry, focusing on how the poetic voice is established through linguistic subtleties. This preparation ensures that every response to a prompt is well-evidenced and meets the marking criteria. By integrating historical and social context into their essays, students develop a critical evaluation of the syllabus texts that leads to the highest levels of achievement.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
