Supporting the local families of Hurdsfield, I, David, offer a professional service that encompasses the full requirements of both English Language and English Literature for secondary-level students. Having taught for over two decades and holding a Bachelor of Education, I help pupils at Tytherington School and other local schools to develop the skills needed for fiction and non-fiction analysis. When addressing the production of original writing, I teach the student how to use creative writing techniques to manage the atmosphere and the character’s viewpoint in narrative and descriptive tasks. To help the learner build a specific mood, I might introduce a lexical set, where a group of words related by a common theme are used to reinforce the tone of a descriptive passage. This syllabus area expands into transactional formats like articles and speeches, where the pupil learns to use longer sentences to build a detailed argument or expanded noun phrases to add precision to their descriptions. I have received excellent testimonials regarding the way my teaching methodology helps students to express their ideas clearly and meet the mark schemes of boards such as AQA or Eduqas.

Moving to the English Literature syllabus, I provide a detailed interpretation of set texts that helps students achieve the thematic depth required for the final grade. A student may explore the dystopian fiction and social commentary found in Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, ensuring they can link the writer’s intentions to the character motivations and historical context within the novel. To develop their understanding of nature and romanticism poetry, the pupil might also study Seamus Heaney's 'Storm on the Island', where the sensory atmosphere and the use of advanced imagery are investigated through a critical evaluation of the islanders' struggle. By analysing quotations and constructing PEEL paragraphs, the learner develops the ability to use textual support effectively within their essays. The tuition ensures that the student is prepared for the assessment requirements of their final examinations, where they must compare anthology poems and respond to unseen poetry with confidence.

For those attending Hurdsfield Primary or other primary schools, I manage the preparation for the 11 plus and 13 plus entrance exams, where students are targeting a successful application to prestigious schools such as Stockport Grammar. I work with the candidate on advanced comprehension tasks that require inference and deduction, alongside verbal reasoning exercises designed to build applied reasoning and logic. When a pupil produces a story for the written assessments, they learn to use punctuation for effect and character development to ensure they are creating an atmosphere that engages the examiners. These vocabulary tasks are balanced with timed practice and the use of past exam papers to ensure the applicant is comfortable with both multiple-choice papers and written assessments. The entrance examination cycle concludes with the final stage of the application process, where I include interview practice to refine the student’s verbal expression and confidence for the interview.

As the final stage of the application process for independent schools, interview practice is essential to ensure the applicant can speak confidently about their school contribution and extracurricular interests. I guide the student through identifying what they will bring to the school community, such as finding a natural way to talk about joining the debating team or a drama production. We work on discussing a book they have enjoyed, focusing on justifying an opinion about a character or a plot turn rather than simply naming the text. By practising responses to brain-teaser or logic-based questions, the candidate learns to talk through their problem-solving process out loud so the interviewer can see how they think. This focused training ensures that every student is prepared to demonstrate their unique personality and curiosity when meeting the admissions board of their target institution.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
