The study of literature encourages a deep engagement with the written word, and I help students in Kilburn explore the themes and structures of their set texts. My name is David, and I provide guidance on how to interpret the social context and character development in works such as Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist. I also explore the contemporary perspectives found in the poetry of Carol Ann Duffy. By practising extract-based analysis, we look at how to connect specific linguistic choices to the wider intentions of the writer, ensuring that every essay is well-evidenced and clearly structured. This approach helps students at Queens Park Community School and St Augustine's CE High to meet the requirements of major exam boards like Edexcel or OCR. My professional record is built on helping students achieve their academic potential, and I have many positive testimonials from parents who have seen their children's confidence grow.

Alongside literary analysis, I address the varied requirements of the English Language GCSE and IGCSE curriculum, drawing on the skills I developed during my Bachelor of Education. For transactional writing, such as a formal speech or a report, a student might use an oxymoron to highlight a paradox. In a separate exercise, they might employ hyperbole to create a persuasive impact on the reader. In a creative writing task, the use of sensory imagery can help to immerse the reader in a narrative, while the structure of the piece is managed to keep the audience engaged. We examine how to compare writers’ perspectives in unseen fiction and non-fiction texts, ensuring that students can identify the subtle ways in which language is used to shape meaning. This comprehensive approach to the syllabus is designed to help students secure top results by meeting the marking criteria of their specific exam board.

My tutoring also encompasses the preparation needed for independent and grammar school entry, a process that I have been involved in for more than 20 years. Students from Malorees Junior and Kilburn Grange School often target places at schools such as the City of London School or North London Collegiate. We look at the skills required for the 11 plus and 13+ entrance examinations, including comprehension tasks and verbal reasoning. By practising their technique and expanding their vocabulary, students learn to handle the competitive nature of these assessments with confidence. I have a long history of my students gaining places at top schools, as they develop the clear expression and technical accuracy needed to succeed in their examinations in Year 6 or Year 8.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
