GCSE English & Entrance Exams Tutor Kingsway

In the community of Kingsway, I provide a professional English tutor service designed to meet the diverse needs of students at all levels of their secondary education. I, David, hold a Bachelor of Education and ensure that my students are prepared for the strict criteria of major examination boards. The English Language papers require students to excel in both analytical skills and original composition. My sessions cover both fiction and non-fiction analysis, teaching the pupil how to evaluate a writer’s methods in an unseen extract. When the student moves to the production of their own work, we focus on the organisation of ideas and the use of engaging hooks. In transactional writing, such as speeches or formal letters, a student might use a tricolon to build a persuasive and balanced argument. For more descriptive writing tasks, we explore how the use of sensory imagery can make a setting more evocative for the reader. A writer could use parenthesis to add an internal thought or extra detail within a sentence, which helps to establish a specific mood in the piece. These skills are essential for the marking criteria of boards like AQA or CIE, and my students have a history of achieving excellent GCSE results.

The study of Literature requires a deep engagement with the historical and social context of 19th-century prose and modern drama. Having tutored for more than twenty years, I understand how to guide students at Quedgeley Park or other local secondary schools through the complexities of their set texts. A student may study the presentation of responsibility and class in J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls or examine the themes of mortality in the poetry of Emily Dickinson, such as 'Because I could not stop for Death'. We focus on the author’s craft, analysing how specific word choices contribute to the thematic depth of the work. This involves practising extract questions where the learner must demonstrate a detailed interpretation of the writer’s intentions. By breaking down the stanza by stanza structure of a poem, the student learns to identify how the poetic voice evolves throughout the piece.

For primary pupils at Kingsway Primary who are targeting competitive entrance exams, the preparation is focused on building the profile required for admission to schools like Sir Thomas Rich’s or Cheltenham Ladies' College. We work on advanced comprehension tasks where the applicant must answer questions with evidence, moving beyond literal meaning to explore inference and deduction. Multiple-choice papers are a significant part of the ISEB pre-test and GL Assessment formats, and we work on the speed and accuracy required for these tests. In written assessments, the student learns to plan a narrative that includes character development and effective punctuation for effect. A candidate might use personification to describe the movement of the wind, showing a high level of vocabulary choice. Successful admissions are a key outcome of this work, and I have helped many students secure places at top schools.

The final stage of the application process for independent schools is the interview, and I provide dedicated practice for this important component. We work on discussing a book the student has enjoyed, helping them justify an opinion about the plot or characters rather than just naming the story. If the applicant is asked reasoning questions, we practise talking through the problem-solving process out loud so the interviewer can see how they think. We also prepare the candidate to show curiosity about the school by asking about the facilities or specific clubs. This work helps the student to find a natural voice, stripping away rehearsed scripts so their genuine personality comes through while answering the interviewer’s questions clearly.
