Qualified English Tutor Knighton – 11 Plus & GCSE Preparation

My name is David, and supporting the residents of Knighton, I provide English tuition that combines a Bachelor’s degree in Education with over twenty years of tutoring experience. I assist students at Overdale Junior School as they prepare for the competitive entrance exams required for independent and grammar school entry. My sessions help candidates manage the multiple-choice papers used by GL Assessment, focusing on the precision needed for verbal reasoning and vocabulary tasks. When students engage with reading comprehension, I teach them how to identify word meanings in context and use inference and deduction to understand character motivations. For written assessments, a student might use sibilance to create a whispering or sinister sound in a descriptive piece, drawing the reader’s attention to the specific atmosphere of the scene. My students consistently gain places at top schools, including Leicester Grammar School and Stoneygate School.

For those applying to independent schools, I provide a detailed focus on interview preparation to ensure the pupil feels ready for the final stage of the application process. We practice discussing a book the student has read, where I guide them to justify why they found a particular plot point or character interesting. If the interviewer asks about hobbies and personal interests, the learner works on explaining the effort they put into a sport or craft, rather than simply naming the activity. We also cover unseen interpretation, such as sharing first thoughts on a photograph or a short poem, which helps the candidate build self-assurance. By finding a natural voice and avoiding rehearsed scripts, the student can speak about how they might contribute to the school through the choir or a sports team. Successful applicants demonstrate an ability to share a perspective and answer unexpected questions during the admissions process.

As pupils move to secondary schools like Sir Jonathan North Girls' College or The Lancaster Academy, the curriculum encompasses both English Language and English Literature. In our Language sessions, I help Year 10 and 11 students with fiction and non-fiction analysis, exploring how writers use stylistic choices to engage their audience. A student might use a tricolon in a persuasive speech to create a memorable rhythm, or employ juxtaposition to highlight the contrast between two different ideas in a narrative. We work on transactional writing, such as formal letters and opinion pieces, where I teach the importance of tone and register in building a perspective. By using past exam papers and model answers, I ensure that my students are familiar with the marking criteria of boards like Edexcel and Eduqas.

The Literature syllabus allows students to explore the historical context and central themes of a wide range of texts. A pupil might study the character motivations and social hierarchy in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, or examine the industrial context of Charles Dickens's Hard Times. When analysing anthology poems, we look at the poetic voice and rhyme scheme, helping the student to produce a comparative analysis that meets the Assessment Objectives. I teach pupils how to structure their essays using clear textual evidence, ensuring that every point they make is well-evidenced and insightful. My students have received excellent GCSE results, and I have received positive testimonials that highlight the effectiveness of my teaching methods.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
