GCSE English & Entrance Exams Tutor Lancing

In the coastal town of Lancing and the wider Adur district, I deliver professional English tutoring that addresses the requirements of the national curriculum and school entry. My name is David and I have over 20 years of experience, holding a Bachelor of Education. For primary students at Lancing CE Primary or North Lancing Primary looking toward the next stage of their education, I provide preparation for entrance exams to local institutions like Lancing College. This involves a thorough review of reading comprehension and creative writing, as well as verbal reasoning tasks. Pupils might work on shuffled sentences or synonyms to build their confidence with competitive entrance exams, ensuring they are familiar with the various question types. The positive feedback I have received from parents often mentions how this preparation has helped their children feel more relaxed and focused. Securing places at top schools is a common goal, and we work through past papers to ensure that every student is familiar with the format of the assessments.

Supporting the transition into secondary years at Sir Robert Woodard Academy or Shoreham Academy, my tutoring addresses the integrated nature of the Language and Literature curriculum, where students engage with the analysis of fiction and non-fiction texts. We look at how a writer might use a lexical set or an oxymoron to create a specific effect in their prose, ensuring that students can identify these techniques in an unseen extract. We also address the requirements of transactional writing, where a student might be asked to produce a report or a review for a GCSE or IGCSE exam. By looking at the marking criteria, we ensure that every piece of writing is well-structured and uses appropriate linguistic devices to engage the reader effectively. My students consistently achieve excellent GCSE results through this detailed and structured approach.

The English Literature syllabus is equally significant, requiring students to engage with a variety of texts from different historical eras and genres. A student might examine the gothic themes in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, considering how the author uses suspense and sensory imagery to grip the reader throughout the novel. Alternatively, they could explore the political themes in Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls, looking at how the play addresses the role of women and social responsibility in a modern context. We work on analysing quotations and practising extract questions, ensuring that students can connect their close observations back to the wider themes of the work. This helps pupils develop the critical responses needed for their examinations, whether they are studying for AQA, Edexcel, or Eduqas.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
