GCSE English & Entrance Exams Tutor Lechlade

The educational environment in Lechlade provides a variety of paths for students, and I offer a professional English tuition service to support them through each stage. I, David, have more than twenty years of experience helping students at Farmor's School and other secondary institutions meet the high standards of the GCSE English Language and Literature curriculum. In the Literature component, a student may explore the mystery and morality within Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre or the presentation of reconciliation in Shakespeare's The Winter’s Tale. We work on essay composition and structure, ensuring that the learner can use textual support to build a convincing argument. My Bachelor of Education informs my approach to these set texts, as I show the student how to connect the historical context of the work to the writer's intentions. Analysing quotations is a core skill, where we break down specific words to see how they contribute to the central themes of the novel or play. This study ensures the student is prepared for the marking criteria of boards such as AQA or Edexcel, leading to excellent GCSE results.
The English Language syllabus demands a high level of technical accuracy and audience awareness across a range of transactional formats. Students must learn how to produce articles, reports, and speeches that are both clear and engaging for the reader. In the analysis of non-fiction, we look at how writers use cohesive devices and stylistic choices to track an argument. When the student moves to the production of their own work, we explore the use of rhetorical techniques to build a perspective. A writer could use anaphora to repeat a specific phrase at the start of consecutive clauses for persuasive impact. For more imaginative tasks, such as narrative writing, we look at how the use of structural shifts can manage the tension in a story. A student might use metaphors to describe a character's internal struggle, ensuring the reader remains engaged with the emotional arc. These sessions contribute towards the final grade, and I provide a space where pupils can refine their work under timed conditions.
Pupils at St Lawrence C of E who are looking to join prestigious secondary schools such as Marling or Pates Grammar must prepare for the specific requirements of the entrance examinations. The 11 plus process involves a significant amount of work on verbal reasoning and applied reasoning tasks, where students must identify patterns and solve word associations. We use past exam papers to familiarise the student with GL Assessment and CEM assessment formats, ensuring they can work effectively. For independent and grammar school entrance, the written components are equally important, and we work on reading comprehension where answering with evidence is required. A candidate might use adjectives to add sensory detail to a story, making the setting more immediate and vivid. The interview is the final stage of the application process for independent schools, where I assist the student in refining their verbal expression and building self-assurance. I have received many positive testimonials from parents who have seen their children grow in confidence through this process.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David tutored our daughter for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
