English Tutor Lee Green | GCSE & 11+ Preparation

My English tutoring for students at Trinity Church of England School or nearby Blackheath High focuses on the articulate and well-structured writing required for the GCSE and IGCSE. Drawing on over twenty years of experience and a Bachelor’s degree in Education, I, David, help Lee Green pupils meet these high academic standards in both English Language and Literature. When we focus on non-fiction work, we might spend time refining the structure of a formal report, where I teach the student how to arrange information logically and manage the tone to suit an official purpose. This involves the use of rhetorical techniques such as an assertion to provide a bold, impactful opening, or the intentional use of modals to add a sense of weight to the recommendations being made. This study is balanced with the analysis of prose and poetry, where we might investigate the themes of cultural identity and the search for belonging in Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake or examine the use of domestic imagery and the exploration of time in the poetry of Philip Larkin. For the creative writing component of the syllabus, we focus on the actual craft of the task, such as how details are selected to make a setting clear. A student might use alliteration to create a specific soft or harsh feeling within a description, or employ a short sentence to provide a sense of closure to a narrative arc. By devloping analytical skills and refining the logical organisation of an academic essay, my students regularly reach the Grade 9 bracket, meeting the strict criteria of boards like AQA and Edexcel.
For younger pupils at local primary schools like Brindishe Lee or St Winifred's, the transition to secondary school involves the challenge of competitive entrance examinations. Many families in the area target a successful application to selective schools such as Eltham College or Colfe’s, which require a high level of proficiency in verbal reasoning and reading comprehension. My English tuition for these assessments targets the high level of accuracy needed for multiple-choice ISEB papers and other entrance exam formats. I help students formulate detailed and perceptive answers to comprehension questions, ensuring they are comfortable with the specific requirements of the assessment process. Significant time is also spent on the creative writing needed for written assessments, where pupils learn to use tools such as onomatopoeia to bring a story to life or sibilance to create a sinister atmosphere. By practising under timed conditions with past exam papers, students develop the exam-day technique required for selective school admissions. My success is reflected in the many positive reviews I have received from parents regarding their child’s academic progress and confidence.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David tutored our daughter for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
