Primary & Secondary English Tutor Leicestershire | GCSE & 11+

In the heart of Leicestershire, families seek support to meet the high standards of secondary admissions. I, David, bring a Bachelor’s degree in Education and over twenty years of experience to my role as an English tutor. I provide 11 plus and 13 plus preparation for pupils at primary schools who are aiming for selective school entry at institutions such as Ratcliffe College or Dixie Grammar School. Within these sessions, I help candidates develop their advanced comprehension tasks by focusing on inference and deduction. When students work on narrative writing, they might use sibilance to create a specific sound effect, or employ alliteration to make a particular phrase more memorable. We also address the logic puzzles and word associations found in verbal reasoning, ensuring that the applicant is prepared for the CEM assessment. Integrating interview practice helps the student build self-assurance and speak confidently about their hobbies and personal interests during the final stage of the application process. In my twenty years as a tutor, my students have consistently secured places at top schools.

For students in the secondary years at schools like Roundhill Academy or The Martin High School, the curriculum moves into the dual requirements of GCSE English Language and English Literature. In Language, I help Year 10 and 11 students with fiction and non-fiction analysis, teaching them how to evaluate a writer’s methods and perspectives. A student might use a tricolon in a persuasive speech to create a sense of balance, or employ an oxymoron in a descriptive piece to highlight a character’s internal conflict. We cover transactional formats like formal letters and articles, where the clarity of argument and audience awareness are essential for meeting the marking criteria. By using past exam papers and model answers, I ensure that my pupils are familiar with the requirements of major exam boards including Edexcel and Eduqas. My students have received excellent GCSE results, and I have received positive reviews from parents that validate the effectiveness of these professional sessions.

The Literature syllabus requires a deep understanding of historical context, alongside the ability to analyse literary techniques. A student might study the character arcs and social commentary in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, or examine the dystopian themes in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. I teach pupils how to structure their essays using clear textual evidence, focusing on how a playwright or author uses specific language techniques to convey meaning. When we look at unseen poetry, we explore the poetic voice and the use of sensory atmosphere to engage the reader. By practising extract questions and analysing quotations, the learner builds the skills needed for a detailed interpretation of the text. Achieving success in these assessments relies on the student’s ability to connect historical context directly to the points they are making in their written work.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
