Lewisham English Tutor: Primary, Secondary, GCSE & 11+

Pupils at Lewisham schools such as St Mary's CE Primary or Lewisham Bridge Primary work to meet the academic standards of the 11 plus and 13 plus. I am David, and having spent more than twenty years in professional tuition since completing my Bachelor’s in Education, I offer the specialised support required for selective school entry. For primary pupils at schools like St Mary's CE Primary or Lewisham Bridge Primary, our work addresses the core skills of reading comprehension and verbal reasoning. We focus on the requirements of the ISEB and various multiple-choice formats, ensuring students can effectively extract meaning and subtle points from written concepts. To help students distinguish themselves, we focus on the craft of creative writing for their written assessments. This might involve using devices such as similes to create vivid comparisons or sensory imagery to help a reader experience the world of the story through sight or sound. Satisfying the academic standards of schools such as Dulwich College or Alleyn’s involves a focus on the precision and clarity of every written response. My students consistently gain entry to top schools, an achievement built on thorough preparation and the development of a student’s own academic confidence.

I provide interview preparation to help students build the confidence to articulate their thoughts during a school's admissions process. Our work focuses on the clarity of a student’s delivery to ensure they can engage with an interviewer in a way that is both natural and focused. Pupils learn to handle the pressure of the final meeting, remaining calm even when faced with unexpected questions. By refining how a student organises and presents their ideas on the spot, I help them meet the demands of a potentially stressful interview setting. Families whose children have secured places at their target institutions have provided positive feedback regarding the effectiveness of these sessions.

At the GCSE level, students at local secondary schools such as Prendergast School face a challenging curriculum that requires an articulate command of both English Language and English Literature. My tuition covers both subjects independently, helping Year 10 and 11 students meet the requirements of the main exam boards such as AQA and Edexcel. Within our literature studies, we might explore the use of colloquial voice and the themes of growing up in Stephen Kelman’s Pigeon English. Moving into poetry, we could analyse the use of rhythm and political subtext in the verse of W.H. Auden. For the English Language paper, we focus on both fiction and non-fiction analysis. We might spend time on narrative writing, teaching students how to use rhetorical devices like asyndeton to create a sense of overwhelming chaos or an oxymoron to create a dramatic, confusing effect for the reader. We also focus on the construction of an article, where I teach the student how to arrange their thoughts and manage their voice to explain a complex topic clearly. By mastering literary analysis and refining the arrangement and flow of formal essays, my students consistently secure top marks, ensuring they are well-prepared for Sixth Form and university.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
