In Longlevens, I provide a professional English tutoring service that helps students reach the high standards required for success in their exams. I, David, hold a Bachelor of Education and bring more than twenty years of experience to every session. For primary pupils at Longlevens Junior who are aiming for selective school admissions at Ribston Hall or Sir Thomas Rich’s, the preparation involves building a foundation in verbal reasoning and comprehension. We work on vocabulary expansion and synonyms and antonyms to ensure the applicant is ready for the precision of GL multiple-choice papers. In the written assessments for independent school entry, the student learns to plan a narrative that shows character development through action and dialogue. A candidate might use personification to describe the morning sun, showing a sophisticated use of figurative language. This preparation helps to build the student’s confidence for the entrance examinations, and I have helped many pupils secure places at top schools.

The final stage of the application process for independent schools is the interview, and I provide a dedicated paragraph for interview preparation for this important component. We work on hobbies and personal interests, helping the student explain why they enjoy a specific activity or what they find most interesting about it. If the candidate is asked about their favourite authors, we practise justifying an opinion about a book rather than just naming the story. We also work on unseen interpretation, where the student might be shown a short poem and asked to share their first thoughts. This work ensures the student can speak in their own words, helping their genuine personality and interests come through while answering the interviewer’s questions clearly. I have received many positive reviews from parents who have seen their children approach these interviews with a sense of self-assurance.

The study of Literature requires a deep engagement with the thematic depth and historical context of set texts. For students at Beaufort Cooperative Academy or other local secondary schools, we explore how playwrights and authors use structural techniques to shape the narrative. A student may study the presentation of memory and identity in Seamus Heaney's poetry, such as 'Digging', or explore the themes of migration and belonging in Andrea Levy's Small Island. We focus on the author’s craft, looking at how the use of structural techniques in drama or prose helps to shape the reader's response. Essay writing practice involves teaching the student how to use quotations to support a detailed interpretation of the writer’s intentions. My sessions provide the necessary support for students to manage the assessment requirements of major boards like OCR or Eduqas.

The English Language curriculum is a study of both fiction and non-fiction analysis and the production of original writing. We work on the synthesis of information and the evaluation of writers’ perspectives in unseen texts, identifying how stylistic choices are used to convey meaning. When the student produces their own work, we focus on the use of descriptive writing techniques to engage the reader. A writer might use pathetic fallacy to reflect a character's mood through the weather, adding a layer of imagery to a story. In transactional writing, such as formal letters or arguments, the student learns how to adapt their tone and register for a specific audience. A student could use a triadic structure to present three related ideas or qualities in a persuasive argument. These skills are vital for achieving Grade 9s, and my pupils consistently achieve excellent GCSE results.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
