My name is David and I bring over two decades of experience to my role as an English tutor in Loxwood, holding a Bachelor’s in Education to support students in their school entry goals. For primary-aged pupils at Loxwood Primary or Plaistow and Kirdford Primary, I offer preparation for competitive entrance exams to schools like Pennthorpe. This involves mastering the ISEB pre-test and developing strong reading comprehension skills through the analysis of varied texts. We look at verbal reasoning and creative writing, ensuring that students can handle the tasks they will face in their written assessments. My service ensures that students are familiar with the format of these tests, which is essential for securing places at top schools in the region.

In addition to the written components of school entry, I offer interview practice to help students feel more comfortable during the selection process. We work on the way a student articulates their thoughts, ensuring they can speak about their interests and their educational goals with clarity and poise. This preparation focuses on the student's ability to express their ideas clearly, helping them to manage any anxiety they may feel about the process. By refining their confidence, pupils are better equipped to showcase their strengths to an admissions panel, ensuring they are well-prepared for the transition to their next school.

For secondary students who may be attending schools like The Weald or Glebelands School, the final years of secondary school require a balanced approach to the dual requirements of Language and Literature. In the Language papers, students engage with fiction and non-fiction analysis to see how a writer might employ assertion or modals to control the tone and authority of their writing. Students practise transactional writing, perhaps by crafting a persuasive letter or an argument, while also developing their skills in narrative writing. By following the strict criteria of major exam boards, students learn how to express their ideas clearly and effectively, leading to grade 9s. The positive feedback I have received from parents is a testament to the growth in confidence that students experience through this comprehensive professional support.

The study of literature involves a detailed exploration of prose, drama, and poetry from different eras to uncover deeper thematic connections. A student may look at the social protest themes in Charles Dickens’s Hard Times, considering how the author critiques the utilitarian values of the Victorian era. They might also examine the post-war context of R.C. Sherriff’s Journey’s End, looking at how the play depicts the psychological impact of conflict on the characters. We focus on annotating texts and practising extract questions, ensuring that students can provide well-evidenced responses in their final examinations.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
