My name is David, and holding a Bachelor of Education, I provide professional English tuition to students in Luton. With over twenty years of experience, I ensure that every pupil develops a deep understanding of the marking criteria across both Literature and Language. The curriculum for secondary qualifications encompasses a variety of genres, where a student may explore the historical context of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar or examine the writer's intentions within Charles Dickens's David Copperfield. Every critical response explores character motivations and the historical setting of each text to provide a well-evidenced argument through structured essays. Students attending schools such as Challney High School for Boys or Denbigh High School meet the standards of exam boards including AQA and Edexcel. I have received positive feedback from parents regarding the quality of my instruction and the resulting excellent GCSE results achieved by their children.

The English Language curriculum is comprised of two distinct branches, encompassing both the interpretation of unseen extracts and the composition of original writing. When tackling a transactional format such as a persuasive article, a student could employ anaphora to emphasise their central argument and create a rhythmic impact on the reader. Transitioning to imaginative tasks, we look at narrative hooks and descriptive language to help a student build a perspective within a story. A student might use metaphors to establish a sense of building tension or sensory detail within a descriptive piece. By identifying how structure is used to interest and engage the reader in an unseen passage, we ensure the student meets the analytical requirements of the syllabus. Organising ideas into a cohesive structure remains a priority for those aiming for high grades in their final assessments.

For younger candidates in Luton, I provide support for selective school entry at the 11 plus and 13 plus levels. Students at Hillborough Junior often aim to satisfy the competitive criteria of independent schools such as St Albans School. This involves mastering reasoning puzzles and vocabulary expansion to prepare for the preliminary screening tests. Within the written assessments, a candidate might use personification to bring a setting to life or build an atmosphere through sensory imagery. Our lessons also include reading comprehension tasks that require inference and deduction, teaching the candidate how to answer with evidence to satisfy the examiners. Successful entrance depends on a thorough review of homework and timed practice to build the necessary exam-day technique, ensuring that every applicant is ready for the high standards of their target institution.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
