Market Harborough English Tutor: Primary, Secondary, GCSE & 11+

My name is David, and for those living in Market Harborough I provide professional English tutoring that draws on a Bachelor’s degree in Education and more than 20 years of experience. I teach pupils how to structure their essays using clear textual evidence, focusing on how a playwright or author uses specific language techniques to convey meaning. When we look at anthology poems, we explore the poetic voice and the use of sensory atmosphere to engage the reader. By practising extract questions and analysing quotations, the learner builds the skills needed for a detailed interpretation of the text. My students have received excellent GCSE results, often achieving top results and Grade 9s in both subjects.

Preparation for the 11 plus and 13 plus cycles is another vital part of my service, supporting Market Harborough CE Academy pupils as they target selective school admissions. I help candidates build their vocabulary expansion by working through synonyms and antonyms, ensuring they can handle the word relationships found in verbal reasoning papers. To ensure a successful application to institutions like Oakham School or Uppingham School, we focus on advanced comprehension tasks where the learner must use inference and deduction to understand character feelings. When students tackle written assessments, I teach them to use sibilance to create a specific mood in a descriptive passage. Refinement of the student’s verbal expression and confidence for the interview represents the final stage of the admissions process.
