Market Harborough English Tutor: Primary, Secondary, GCSE & 11+

My name is David, and for those living in Market Harborough I provide professional English tutoring that draws on a Bachelor’s degree in Education and more than 20 years of experience. I address the dual requirements of GCSE English Language and English Literature, helping students at Welland Park Academy or The Robert Smyth Academy to achieve their potential. In our Language sessions, I help Year 10 and 11 students with fiction and non-fiction analysis, teaching them how to evaluate a writer’s methods and perspectives. A student might use a tricolon in a persuasive speech to create a sense of balance, or employ an oxymoron in a descriptive piece to highlight a character’s internal conflict. We cover transactional formats like formal letters and articles, where the clarity of argument and audience awareness are essential for meeting the marking criteria. By using past exam papers and model answers from major boards including Edexcel and Eduqas, I help my students prepare for their final exams. Every piece of work is marked against board standards to identify areas for improvement and ensure progress toward the final grade.
The Literature syllabus requires a deep understanding of historical context, alongside the ability to analyse literary techniques. A student might study the character arcs and social commentary in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, or examine the Victorian morality in Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. I teach pupils how to structure their essays using clear textual evidence, focusing on how a playwright or author uses specific language techniques to convey meaning. When we look at anthology poems, we explore the poetic voice and the use of sensory atmosphere to engage the reader. By practising extract questions and analysing quotations, the learner builds the skills needed for a detailed interpretation of the text. My students have received excellent GCSE results, often achieving top results and Grade 9s in both subjects.
Preparation for the 11 plus and 13 plus cycles is another vital part of my service, supporting Market Harborough CE Academy pupils as they target selective school admissions. I help candidates build their vocabulary expansion by working through synonyms and antonyms, ensuring they can handle the word relationships found in verbal reasoning papers. To ensure a successful application to institutions like Oakham School or Uppingham School, we focus on advanced comprehension tasks where the learner must use inference and deduction to understand character feelings. When students tackle written assessments, I teach them to use sibilance to create a specific mood in a descriptive passage. Refinement of the student’s verbal expression and confidence for the interview represents the final stage of the admissions process. My students have consistently secured places at top schools, and I have received positive reviews that reflect the high standards of these professional sessions.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David tutored our daughter for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
