GCSE English & Entrance Exams Tutor Marston

In the Marston community, I provide a professional English tutoring service that helps students to meet the high standards of the GCSE and IGCSE examinations. I am David, and as a teacher with a Bachelor of Education, I support learners at schools such as The Swan School to master the marking criteria of major boards like AQA and CIE. Our sessions cover both the interpretation of literature and the production of language tasks, ensuring that students are prepared for the Assessment Objectives of each paper. A pupil may investigate the industrial context and social commentary within Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations, or perhaps examine the poetic voice and symbolic imagery in William Blake’s poem 'London'. We move from the close analysis of quotations to the structural devices in drama, helping the student to build a critical response that is well-evidenced and clear. This detailed interpretation of the set texts helps the student to build a perspective that provides a strong foundation for their final results.

In our GCSE English Language sessions, we focus on the synthesis of information and the comparison of writers' perspectives in non-fiction texts. A student might analyse the structural techniques and evocative language used in an article before moving to craft their own transactional piece, such as a speech or an opinion piece. When producing a persuasive argument, a learner could use personal pronouns or a lexical set to build a sense of connection with the audience. We also practise narrative writing, where the use of repetition and varied sentence structures helps to maintain the reader’s interest throughout the story. Through careful checking and proofreading, I ensure that every student is equipped to achieve top results in their final assessments.

For younger pupils at St Nicholas or New Marston Primary who are preparing for 11 plus and 13 plus entrance examinations, I offer targeted support for the selective school admissions process. My background, combined with more than twenty years of experience, ensures that every candidate is prepared for the final stage of the application, covering the verbal reasoning logic and vocabulary tasks required for GL multiple-choice papers. We move from these reasoning tasks to the advanced comprehension skills needed for written assessments, where a candidate might use vivid language to enhance their descriptive writing. To target a successful application to schools like Rye St Antony, we use past papers and timed practice to build the student’s confidence and accuracy. The success of this approach is often mentioned in the encouraging parent comments I receive.

The interview stage is the final component of the admissions process for independent schools, and I provide dedicated practice to help the student speak confidently and naturally. We move beyond rehearsed answers, working together to ensure the applicant can justify an opinion on a book they have enjoyed or talk through their problem-solving process for a logical reasoning question. A student works on explaining the specific effort they put into a personal achievement, moving beyond simply naming an award to help the interviewer understand the goal they set for themselves. We also prepare the candidate to show curiosity about the school community, perhaps by asking about specific sports clubs or drama productions that align with their extracurricular interests. By stripping away overly formal scripts, I help the student’s genuine personality come through during the discussion.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
