Having this kind of control over language is what examination boards look for, and I provide clear instructions on how to organise a response so that every section of the paper is finished properly.

Beyond the work on the language paper, looking into English Literature helps students understand the stories that formed the roots of our culture, so we spend time looking at the history and social background of every book. In our lessons, a student might look at the way George Orwell describes a world where even the "clocks were striking thirteen" to understand the warnings in Nineteen Eighty-Four. We might also examine the layered social structures in Jane Austen’s Emma by looking at how a character’s manners reveal their true standing in the town of Highbury. We work on extract-based analysis, where I show the student how to pick out a key quote—like Lady Macbeth’s plea to "fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty"—and explain what those specific words tell us about the writer's intent. The feedback from families in the community shows that this way of teaching builds a great deal of confidence, helping pupils write the kind of analytical essays that get top results. By looking at the actual words on the page rather than just the plot, students learn to produce writing that is clear, evidence-based, and persuasive.
