GCSE English & Entrance Exams Tutor Moor Park

Pupils in Moor Park work to meet the high academic standards of the 11 plus and 13 plus as they target selective school entry. I am David, and having spent more than twenty years in professional tuition since completing my Bachelor’s in Education, I offer the specialised support required for successful applications. To help students distinguish themselves, we address the craft of creative writing for their written assessments at schools like Northwood Prep. This might involve using devices such as descriptive language to create vivid comparisons or a tricolon to help a reader experience the world of a story through a balanced description. Our work also addresses the core skills of reading comprehension and verbal reasoning, prioritising the requirements of the ISEB and various multiple-choice formats to ensure students can effectively extract meaning from written concepts. Satisfying the academic standards of schools such as Merchant Taylors’ or St Helen’s involves the precision and clarity of every written response. My students consistently gain entry to top schools, an achievement built on thorough preparation and the development of a student’s own academic confidence.
I also provide interview preparation and practice to help students build the confidence to articulate their thoughts during a school's admissions process. Our work addresses the clarity of a student’s delivery to ensure they can express their ideas clearly while remaining themselves. Pupils learn to handle the pressure of the meeting, remaining calm even when faced with unexpected questions. By refining how a student organises and presents their ideas on the spot, I help them meet the demands of a potentially stressful interview setting. Families whose children have secured places at their target institutions have provided positive feedback regarding the effectiveness of these sessions.
At the GCSE level, students face a challenging curriculum that requires an articulate command of both English Language and English Literature. My English tuition addresses both subjects independently, helping Year 10 and 11 students meet the requirements of major exam boards such as AQA and Edexcel. For the English Language paper, we explore narrative writing and teaching students how to use rhetorical devices like juxtaposition to create a dramatic effect or a short sentence to bring tension to the piece. This imaginative focus is balanced with both fiction and non-fiction analysis, including the construction of articles, speeches and letters. I teach the student how to arrange their thoughts and manage their voice to explain an intricate topic clearly.
Our literature studies focus deeply on the critical thinking and analytical skills needed to unpack complex set texts. We examine how writers use structure, form, and language to convey deeper meanings, ensuring students understand the historical and social contexts behind the words. For instance, we might explore the themes of social hierarchy and the pursuit of marriage in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, or evaluate the scathing critique of Edwardian capitalism in J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls. Moving into poetry, we analyse how the use of rhythm and personal narrative in the verse of Maya Angelou influences the emotional tone of her work. By mastering this type of literary analysis and refining the arrangement of formal essays, my students build the comprehensive skills required for exam success. As a result, they consistently secure top marks in both final papers.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David tutored our daughter for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
