Many families in New Cross target places at schools such as Addey and Stanhope, Deptford Green, or Haberdashers' Hatcham College, where entry is highly competitive. My name is David, and as a Bachelor of Education with more than 20 years of experience, I provide the support needed to meet the selective entry standards of these institutions. This involves preparing for the 11 plus through the study of shuffled sentences, verbal reasoning, and multiple-choice papers. Pupils work on expanding their vocabulary and refining their clear expression, ensuring they are well-prepared for the written assessments and comprehension tasks they will encounter in Year 6. My students consistently gain places at top schools, reflecting a commitment to high academic standards and thorough preparation.

The English Language curriculum addresses the requirements for both fiction and non-fiction analysis, where students produce original work across diverse formats. A student might focus on the creation of original stories, using alliteration and vivid language to build a compelling narrative, or they may develop their skills in transactional writing by crafting persuasive articles. We explore the process of comparing writers’ perspectives, teaching pupils how to identify the linguistic devices used to engage an audience in an article or speech. This comprehensive training ensures that students are comfortable with the different styles of writing required by major exam boards like AQA and Edexcel.

The study of English Literature requires students to engage with the themes and historical context of prose, poetry, and drama. A candidate could examine the post-colonial themes in Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner, or perhaps analyse the Regency fiction and Romanticism found in the poetry of Lord Byron. I emphasise the importance of essay composition and the use of textual evidence to support an argument, helping students to meet the high standards of the syllabus. By focusing on the writer's intentions and the social factors of the era, pupils learn to produce critical responses that satisfy the strict criteria of the examinations.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
