For secondary students in Oaklands, the academic challenge of the higher curriculum requires an approach that prioritises both analytical depth and creative precision. I am David, and with a Bachelor of Education and more than twenty years of experience, I offer a professional English tutoring service that helps Year 10 and 11 pupils meet the requirements of boards such as AQA and Edexcel. For the language syllabus, we explore the structural choices required to produce persuasive essays, reports, or articles. This involves the application of rhetorical techniques, where a pupil might learn to use a first-person perspective to build a sense of intimacy with the reader, or employ humour to present ideas in a balanced pattern. When analysing unseen fiction extracts, we study how a writer handles details to establish a specific mood. Our sessions address the full scope of the GCSE and IGCSE syllabus, covering both fiction and non-fiction analysis. By focusing on essay composition and ensuring that original arguments are clearly expressed, my students consistently achieve top results.

Refining these analytical methods is also central to the study of the set texts within the literature curriculum. The study of literature offers students a chance to evaluate universal themes through diverse poetry, prose and drama. In our sessions, a student might examine the themes of freedom and the search for identity in Benjamin Zephaniah’s Refugee Boy, evaluating how character actions represent broader historical events. When preparing for the Shakespeare element of the literature paper, we delve into how dramatic structure and language reflect deeper character developments. For instance, we might examine the themes of madness and mortality in Hamlet, analyzing how the tragic protagonist's internal conflict is mirrored in the pacing of his soliloquies. My tutoring directly addresses the marking criteria of major exam boards, including OCR and Edexcel, by teaching students how to structure clear, analytical essays that answer the question precisely and meet every assessment requirement. Through this focus on critical responses and textual evidence, many of my students consistently achieve excellent results, which is an outcome noted in the positive feedback I have received from families.

Supporting younger pupils as they prepare for the transition to secondary education is also a central facet of the service. For pupils currently attending local schools such as Oaklands Primary or St Mary’s, our work addresses the core areas of reading comprehension and verbal reasoning. Many candidates targeting places at prestigious schools like Sherrardswood or independent colleges in St Albans need to show accuracy in both written and multiple-choice papers. We work systematically through past exam papers to develop reliable pacing, ensuring that children are familiar with the style of questions they will encounter on exam day. In the creative writing section of these entrance examinations, pupils practise using imagery to build vivid imagery. This structured preparation assists students in gaining places at these competitive institutions through a thorough understanding of the examination formats.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
