Primary & Secondary English Tutor Osidge (11+ & GCSE)

Providing English tutoring to the Osidge community, I draw upon my Bachelor of Education and over twenty years of professional teaching experience to support local pupils. My name is David, and I address the full academic scope of the English Language and English Literature curriculum for secondary-level students. In the Language papers, a candidate might work on a formal letter or an article where the use of juxtaposition serves to highlight a specific argument or perspective. Since the major exam boards like AQA and Edexcel require high standards of clarity, we explore how to arrange ideas using compound and intricate sentence structures to engage a specific audience. Whether the student is crafting a descriptive piece or an instance of transactional writing, my tuition targets the marking criteria through careful checking and the application of advanced linguistic subtleties. These methods have contributed to my students achieving top results in their final examinations.
Moving into the requirements for secondary school admission, pupils attending Osidge Primary or Monkfrith Primary often prepare for the selection processes at Queen Elizabeth's School or Dame Alice Owen's. We examine the intricacies of multiple-choice papers, where the ability to interpret synonyms and antonyms is essential for success. I provide guidance on the ISEB pre-test requirements and the GL Assessment format by strengthening verbal reasoning and expanding the student’s active vocabulary. While these assessments are technical, I also incorporate creative writing techniques to ensure candidates can produce a story that satisfies the high standards of local grammar and independent schools. This structured preparation supports the student as they work toward a place at a selective institution.
The English Literature syllabus presents a different set of challenges, involving the study of Shakespeare's Othello alongside the atmospheric prose found in Susan Hill's The Woman in Black. A student might analyse how historical and social context influences character motivation, perhaps looking at the Jacobean context of a tragedy or the Victorian morality within a modern novel. We practise extract-based analysis where the goal is to connect specific details in a scene to the broader themes of the play or book. By working on essay composition and the refinement of textual evidence, students learn to construct critical responses that align with the examiner’s perspective. I have received extensive positive feedback from parents who appreciate this balanced approach to literary analysis.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David tutored our daughter for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
