English Tutor Piccadilly for GCSE Results & 11 Plus Entry

I provide English tutoring to the community in Piccadilly, drawing upon a Bachelor’s in Education and over twenty years of professional experience. My name is David, and my service is designed to address the multifaceted requirements of the English curriculum for both primary and secondary students. We move through the requirements of competitive entrance exams, addressing the need for verbal reasoning and the ability to handle GL multiple-choice papers or CEM assessments. For independent school entrance, we explore how to produce an engaging story, using sibilance and other figurative devices to create a specific mood. I have received a great deal of positive feedback regarding the way this tuition prepares students for the academic demands of the selection process.

In addition to the written components, I provide interview preparation for students who are looking to join institutions such as the City of London School or St Paul's School. During these sessions, we work on the refinement of the student’s confidence and their ability to express academic or personal interests clearly. This does not involve mechanical drills but instead looks at the overall presentation of the candidate's thoughts. This component of my service helps pupils from Soho Parish or St Clement Danes feel more prepared for the verbal part of the entrance process.

A student could work on a formal letter or an argument, where the use of modals might be employed to create a sense of possibility or necessity within an argument. We also examine narrative writing, focusing on how to use sensory atmosphere and narrative hooks to engage the reader from the outset. By analysing past papers from boards such as AQA and Cambridge IGCSE, students learn to apply the marking criteria and refine their clear expression. This academic narrative ensures that students are prepared for the challenges of secondary schooling and subsequent final results.

Within the Literature syllabus, the study could involve Shakespeare's The Tempest or the nature-focused poetry of William Wordsworth. A student might explore how the writer uses language to convey layered themes such as power, belonging, or the sublime. We prioritise essay composition and the use of well-evidenced arguments to ensure that students can meet the requirements of the exam boards. The study of nineteenth-century prose or modern drama also involves looking at historical context and writer’s intentions, providing an integrated understanding of literary analysis and criticism.
