Providing professional English tuition in Sawston allows me to help students achieve their potential through a structured and engaging approach to the curriculum. My name is David, and I have over 20 years of experience in the profession, during which time I have developed a deep understanding of the requirements of all major examination boards. For a student currently in the primary years at Icknield Primary who is aiming for a first-choice school such as The Leys or a selective grammar school, the preparation for entrance examinations is a multifaceted task. We work on the verbal reasoning and comprehension skills required for the 11 plus, focusing on inference and deduction and the ability to answer with evidence. In our sessions, we also incorporate interview preparation to ensure the applicant can speak confidently and express a viewpoint when discussing a book or their favourite authors. This holistic approach to the admissions process is a key factor in my students securing places at top schools.

When students move into secondary schools like Sawston Village College or Linton Village College, the dual-syllabus of GCSE English Language and English Literature requires a more advanced level of analysis and composition. In the Language papers, pupils must demonstrate their ability to produce a variety of transactional formats, such as an article or a series of persuasive speeches, where the use of rhetorical questions or a semantic field can enhance the impact of their argument. This work is balanced with imaginative writing tasks, where the student might use repetition or personification to create a specific sensory atmosphere in a descriptive piece. By working through past exam papers and model answers, Year 10 and 11 students learn to meet the assessment requirements of boards such as AQA and Edexcel. My record of helping students achieve excellent GCSE results is a testament to the effectiveness of these methods. The high standard of this instruction is frequently noted in the positive testimonials I receive from parents.

The Literature curriculum further expands the student’s intellectual horizon by introducing them to a variety of set texts and anthology poems. Having earned my Bachelor of Education, I guide students through works such as Shakespeare's Macbeth, where a student might explore the themes of ambition and the supernatural. A pupil might also examine the ethereal beauty and romanticism in Percy Bysshe Shelley's 'Ozymandias', focusing on the use of imagery and symbolism. These lessons involve a stanza by stanza analysis of poetry and the study of character arcs and dramatic irony in drama, ensuring the student can provide a detailed interpretation supported by well-evidenced paragraphs. We look at the historical context of each work to see how the writer’s intentions were shaped by the world around them, allowing the student to construct a critical response that demonstrates thematic depth. This rigorous approach to literary analysis is designed to help students achieve the grade 9s that facilitate their transition to Sixth Form.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
