The tutoring service I offer to students in Shadwell is designed to support pupils through the competitive secondary school entry process and beyond. My name is David and I hold a Bachelor of Education, bringing more than 20 years of expertise to every session I lead. Pupils from local schools like Bigland Green or Blue Gate Fields often work toward securing a place at Bancroft's or Forest School. The tuition incorporates reading comprehension and verbal reasoning, where a student might work on shuffled sentences or the expansion of their vocabulary. We look at the requirements for the ISEB pre-test and practise under timed conditions to ensure the student is comfortable with the format of competitive entrance exams.

To complement the written assessments, I provide an opportunity for interview preparation and practice, which is an essential component of the selection process for many independent schools. This involves working on how a student expresses their thoughts and building the confidence to speak clearly about their interests and academic goals. We explore the way a candidate might respond to unexpected questions, ensuring they can handle the interview process without anxiety. This preparation for the verbal component is handled as a distinct task, aiming to refine the student’s presence and vocal delivery before they meet with the admissions tutors.

The requirements for GCSE success are equally demanding, requiring a pupil to demonstrate a high standard in both English Language and English Literature. A student at Bishop Challoner could be asked to perform a non-fiction analysis of an unseen text, perhaps identifying how rhetorical questions are used to engage a reader. In a separate task, we look at how a writer structures their argument to be more persuasive. This work addresses the marking criteria of boards like AQA and IGCSE, ensuring that transactional writing tasks like reports or letters are well-organised and tonally appropriate. The process involves looking at the examiner’s perspective to understand how to maximise marks through careful checking and proofreading of every piece of work.

A student’s understanding of the literary canon is also addressed through the study of major syllabus texts and poetry. A pupil might examine the themes of social class and ambition in Charles Dickens's Great Expectations or they could explore the stark reality of conflict in the war poetry of Wilfred Owen. When analysing these works, we look at the writer’s intentions and the historical context that shaped the narrative, using textual evidence to support every point in an essay. I have received many positive reviews from parents who have seen their children achieve top results after following this structured approach to the curriculum.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
