Shepherds Bush English Tutor | GCSE, 11 Plus & Entrance Exams

In the Shepherd’s Bush area, students attending schools like St Stephen’s or Addison often seek a professional English tutor to help them meet the high standards of the secondary curriculum. I am David and I offer a Bachelor’s degree in Education along with more than two decades of teaching experience. My tuition encompasses the full scope of both English Language and English Literature, ensuring that year 10 and 11 students at Phoenix Academy are prepared for the requirements of major exam boards like AQA or Edexcel. A student might study the gothic atmosphere and suspense in Susan Hill's The Woman in Black or they could investigate the lyrical beauty and themes of the Victorian era in the poetry of Alfred Lord Tennyson. This academic work involves annotating texts and practising extract questions to ensure a student can connect close-up details back to the wider themes of the book or poem.

The technical requirements of the English Language paper are addressed by looking at both creative writing and the analysis of non-fiction texts. A pupil could work on a descriptive writing piece that uses sensory imagery to bring a setting to life. In a different structural exercise, they might look at how to structure a tricolon within a persuasive speech to create a memorable impact. We also address transactional formats such as articles and formal letters, where the clarity of the argument and the use of appropriate linguistic devices are essential. This comprehensive approach to the syllabus ensures that students are capable of producing high-quality work, which has led to many of my students achieving excellent GCSE results.

For students in the primary years, the aim is often to secure a future placement at a prestigious institution such as St Paul’s Girls’ School or Latymer Upper. Preparation for independent and grammar school entry involves a thorough review of verbal reasoning and reading comprehension skills. A candidate might work on multiple-choice papers or practise creative writing to satisfy the selective criteria of these competitive schools. I assist pupils in building their vocabulary and understanding the grammar rules that are essential for written assessments. My students consistently gain places at top schools, and the positive feedback I have received over the years serves as a testament to the effectiveness of these academic methods.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
