English Tutor Shoreditch | Preparation for 11+ & GCSE

The primary years at Virginia Primary or Shoreditch Park often serve as a platform for pupils preparing for the competitive selection process at prestigious secondary schools. My name is David and I have over 20 years of experience, holding a Bachelor of Education. Pupils often work toward a successful application to schools such as Central Foundation Boys' School or City of London School for Girls. The preparation covers the essential components of 11+ and 13+ entrance examinations, including verbal reasoning and advanced comprehension tasks. When studying at institutions such as Haggerston School, the work involves looking at character motivation and the historical context, while also practising essay composition and structure. I guide students through the process of well-evidenced textual analysis, ensuring they can meet the marking criteria of boards such as OCR or Cambridge IGCSE. In the English Language section of the curriculum, the work involves both the analysis of unseen fiction and the production of original transactional writing. A student could be asked to write a formal letter or a persuasive article, perhaps using superlatives to enhance their tone. In a different task, we work on how they might employ direct address to engage their audience more effectively. We also work on creative writing, where a student might practise using a tricolon or personification to add depth to their narrative. The goal is to ensure that all written assessments are clear and well-structured, following the specific requirements of the major exam boards.
