Working as an English tutor in Slough, I support students through the requirements of the GCSE curriculum and the competitive nature of secondary school entry. My name is David, and I hold a Bachelor of Education, having spent over twenty years helping pupils reach their educational goals. For students attending Langley Grammar or Upton Court, the English Literature syllabus covers a wide range of texts, including 19th-century prose like Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre. A student might explore the social commentary and Victorian morality inherent in the text, focusing on the character arc of the protagonist. We also examine modern drama, such as Dennis Kelly's DNA, where a learner might analyse how the playwright uses structural devices to build tension. By working through extract questions and focusing on the author's craft, the student learns how to structure a well-evidenced essay that meets the marking criteria of major exam boards like AQA and Edexcel.

The English Language curriculum requires a balance between fiction and non-fiction analysis and the student’s own original writing. For those at St Bernard's, mastering narrative writing involves a deep understanding of how to use descriptive language to create a vivid atmosphere. Transitioning from the creative process of putting a story together to the logical evaluation of a writer's methods, a student could identify how an author uses asyndeton to build momentum in a passage. We practise transactional formats like speeches and reports, ensuring that the student can adapt their tone and register for different purposes. By working with past exam papers and identifying areas for improvement, students build the confidence to handle the assessment requirements of boards like OCR or Eduqas.

For primary pupils in Slough, preparation for independent and grammar school entrance is a key part of my service. Candidates from Castleview or Montem who are targeting a place at Eton College work through the selective criteria of competitive entrance exams, including verbal reasoning and GL Assessment papers. We focus on vocabulary expansion and linguistic logic to ensure the applicant can handle word associations and inference and deduction tasks. Moving from these precision-based exercises to the creative demands of creative writing techniques, a candidate might learn to use sibilance to enhance their descriptive depth. This work ensures the student is ready for the examinations in Year 6 and can meet the high standards of their first-choice school.

To prepare for the final interview stage, I guide candidates through school suitability discussions and logical reasoning practice. We work on identifying specific facilities or clubs at the target school that interest the student, helping them link these to their own personal goals. A candidate might practice responding to brain-teaser questions, learning to talk through their problem-solving process out loud so the interviewer can follow their thinking. We also build the confidence to share a perspective on current events, ensuring the student can give their viewpoint clearly without relying on a script. My pupils have consistently achieved excellent results, and I have received positive reviews regarding the professional standards of my tuition.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
