My name is David, and I have provided professional English tutoring in Staines upon Thames for two decades, helping students reach the high standards required for selective school entry. For pupils at Laleham Primary or Staines Prep, the journey toward a place at Halliford School or Sir William Perkins’s involves a detailed look at the 11 plus and 13+ entrance examinations. A student might practise reading comprehension by identifying onomatopoeia within a passage to explain how the writer creates a specific soundscape. To ensure their own creative writing is effective, we work on the use of vivid language and varied sentence structures to manage the pace of a story. This preparation helps students aiming for success in the entrance examinations to overcome interview anxiety and approach their assessments with clarity. My students consistently gain entry to top schools, a result of the supportive methods that are often mentioned in parent comments.

Part of this preparation includes a dedicated way for a student to express their thoughts in a formal environment. Interview practice is an important facet of the service, where we work on the refinement of a student’s confidence and their ability to handle a range of questions with assurance. This involves teaching the student how to expand on their answers and present their ideas clearly, which ensures they can communicate their interests and achievements effectively. We discuss how to engage with the interviewer and how to think critically on the spot, providing a separate but complementary skill to the written assessments. By preparing in this way, pupils can approach the selection process at competitive secondary schools with a sense of readiness and calm.

The transition to secondary-level study at institutions like Thamesmead School requires a comprehensive understanding of the GCSE and IGCSE English Language syllabus. Students must master both fiction and non-fiction analysis, learning to compare the methods used by different writers to engage their audience. In transactional writing tasks, such as composing a speech or a persuasive article, a student might use polysyndeton to emphasise a list of points or to create a feeling of overwhelming detail. For creative writing, we explore how the overall structure of a piece can be used to build tension or to provide a satisfying conclusion. This ensures that students can meet the marking criteria of boards like AQA and Edexcel and achieve the excellent GCSE results they are working toward.

A thorough grasp of language is essential for the study of English Literature, where students explore a variety of syllabus texts. A student might examine the dystopian themes and social control in Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, or analyse the tragedy of Shakespeare’s Othello to explore character motivation and the use of dramatic irony. These studies require the student to produce well-evidenced essays that integrate historical context and a deep analysis of quotations. By working through past exam papers and understanding the examiner’s perspective, pupils can develop a critical response that meets the requirements for Grade 9s. Whether studying Victorian novels or modern British drama, the ability to express nuanced interpretations is a central part of the work.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
