GCSE English & Entrance Exams Tutor Steeple Claydon

My name is David, and I hold a Bachelor’s in Education, which provides the foundation for the English tutoring I offer to families in Steeple Claydon. For children at Steeple Claydon School or Padbury, the process of independent and grammar school entrance requires a mastery of both reading comprehension and verbal reasoning. We work on inference and deduction, ensuring that students can answer questions with evidence and understand word meanings in context. When preparing for written assessments, a pupil might use onomatopoeia to bring a descriptive writing piece to life, or focus on planning a narrative that maintains a consistent tone. Whether targeting a place at the Royal Latin School or Akeley Wood, students must demonstrate a high standard of grammar and punctuation through careful proofreading. My tenure of more than two decades allows me to guide pupils through these requirements, ensuring that every story or comprehension task meets the expectations of the examiners. My students consistently gain places at top schools, a fact often noted in the reviews I receive from parents.

Within the GCSE Literature curriculum, students are encouraged to explore the thematic depth of a wide range of syllabus texts alongside the Language syllabus. A student may examine the Jacobean context of Shakespeare's Macbeth, where an analysis might focus on how character motivation could be influenced by the social hierarchy of the time. The study of poetry may also include Carol Ann Duffy's 'War Photographer' to consider how imagery could convey a sensory atmosphere within a conflict zone. By practising extract-based analysis and essay composition, year 10 and 11 students attending The Buckingham School learn to integrate historical context and textual support into their work. This analytical skill is essential for meeting the marking criteria of boards like AQA, OCR, or Eduqas.

The English Language syllabus requires a detailed interpretation of both fiction and non-fiction analysis, ensuring that analytical skills are developed alongside the production of original writing. In the transactional writing section, students learn to produce articles, leaflets, and formal letters that show a high level of audience awareness. A student might use rhetorical questions to engage a reader’s curiosity within an opinion piece, ensuring the argument remains persuasive and focused. We work on structural shifts and the use of cohesive devices, and by working through the drafting and redrafting process, I help the student refine their stylistic choices. Pupils are taught to adapt their tone and register to the purpose and form of the task, helping them to express ideas clearly and ensure their written work meets the highest standards of the curriculum.

If you want a serious professional who can lift a student immediately, who knows the board requirements for doing well, and who can tailor tuition to the precise needs of the kid, then David is the man. My son is bright, but he was not well taught in English. David turned it all around within a matter of weeks and set him on track to a great GCSE grade. Don't mess around - go with David. Highly recommend.

David

David tutored our daughter  for 11+ English. I always found him to be very professional, organised and methodical in his approach. He always had a good supply of appropriate material that challenged her and pushed her to the next level. The two of them clicked very quickly and our daughter progressed very well. David is friendly and related well with her. Our daughter really enjoyed her sessions with him. She was accepted by all the top private and grammar schools that we applied to.

Priti

David has been helping my son prepare for his 11+ exams. We got started with extra tuition quite late, however already during this time I have noticed a big difference in my son’s attitude and study technique. He has significantly improved his creative writing and also his understanding of how to tackle verbal and non-verbal reasoning style questions. David is helpful and accommodating as a teacher and I am very happy to recommend him and his approach to teaching.
